The photo finish camera at Zia Park couldn’t separate Sofia’s Gift and Flight Song at the wire, as the two rivals reached the wire simultaneously in the October 27, $145,000 New Mexico Cup Oaks (R) for state-bred 3-year-old fillies.
Sofia’s Gift and Flight Song both covered their 6-furlong trips in 1:12.07, and they hit the finish line 3 3/4 lengths in front of third- place Shug’s Best. Luis Fuentes rode Sofia’s Gift for owner and trainer Robyne Draper, while Alfredo Juarez Jr. piloted Flight Song for owners R.D. Hubbard and Shaun Hubbard and trainer Todd Fincher.
Sofia’s Gift was bred by Fred Alexander, Todd Fincher, and Brad King, while Flight Song was bred by R.D. Hubbard. Both fillies are daughter of Attila’s Storm, a 17-year-old Grade 3-winning son of Forest Wildcat who has foaled 20 black-type stakes winners from nine crops.
Attila’s Storm has sired the earners of more than $11.5 million from 202 starters, includ- ing multiple stakes winners Thermal, Stormin
The Jewels, Tilla Cat, and Little Vidalia. The stallion is owned by R.D. Hubbard and stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Sofia’s Gift is one of three starters foaled by Gift’s In Excess, a winning 16-year-old daugh- ter of the Siberian Express stallion In Excess (IRE). The filly’s second dam, the winning His Majesty mare Gift To The World, produced eight winners, including Uncle Denny, a full brother to Gift’s In Excess who won the 2005 El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Bay Meadows.
Sofia’s Gift’s third dam, the winning
Hail To Reason mare Lotareason, foaled
two stakes winners, both of whom were half siblings to Gift To The World, including 1986 Cornhusker Handicap (G2) winner Gourami.
Flight Song is out of Hang Glide, a multiple stake placed Dome mare. The filly is a full sis- ter to multiple stakes winners Thermal, Reaper, and stakes winner Another Brother.
