John Deere EMD Stakes
LOUISIANA BUNNY
by John Moorehouse
Louisiana Bunny hopped to her second career stakes win, this time taking the $42,356 John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge at
Emerald Downs on Aug. 20.
Javier Matias was aboard for this 350-yard run,
which saw Louisiana Bunny lead at every call. She broke on top from the 8-post, opening a 1/2-length separation by the time she entered the stretch and holding on to win by that same margin. The filly finished the race in :18.456, for an 82 speed index.
Nick Lowe trains Louisiana Bunny, who was part of three straight stakes wins for the conditioner on the Aug. 20 Emerald Downs card.
The filly now has two wins in three starts—both in stakes company. She broke her maiden and earned black type on July 6 in the Grants Pass Firecracker Futurity. Lee Markholt, who home-bred Louisiana Bunny, banked a $20,331 prize from this result that nearly doubled the filly’s total earnings to $44,931.
Markholt also home-bred My Best Bunny Yet, the dam of Louisiana Bunny. The 2012 mare com- peted in four restricted stakes herself, finishing third in the 2015 running of the Portland Meadows Fall Derby. Louisiana Bunny is her only foal to date.
CM Dillingham Advice, the post-time favorite, finished second by a neck. Another Lowe trainee, CM Dillingham Advice (Best Advice-CM Mo Baby) is owned by Chris Sutton and had Luis Gonzalez aboard. Super Bowl Sunny Day (PYC Prize Time- Holland Last Star) placed third under Cerapio Figueroa for owner Gilberto Madrigal and trainer Jose Rosales Gomez.
Not Another Lover (Sixthirteen TB-Lover Cat) and No Juans Fool (Fastnfierce-Juan Full Corona) dead-heated for fourth place, and were followed by Skyywalker (Fly Chisholm Fly-La Jackye), Millers Fortune (Seperate Interest-Jess Mairi) and Coopers Best Card (Docs Best Card-Super Cooper).
Bob Woodard Memorial Cl.
BEACH TREAT
by John Moorehouse
Beach Treat, the reigning Indiana Quarter Horse of the Year, successfully defended his title in the $94,600 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic. The five-
year-old gelding dominated en route to his second straight win in the stakes event at Indiana Grand Race Course on Aug. 20.
The morning-line favorite and third-quickest qualifier, Beach Treat broke on top from the 3-post and never looked back. He opened a 1-length lead by the first call, widening the gap to 1 1/2-lengths by the time he hit the stretch and powered through the final yards to win by daylight. With Oscar Macias aboard, Beach Treat finished the race in :19.670 and posted a 98 speed index. That time stood as the second-fastest in the 12-year history of the Bob Woodard Memorial.
Ronald G. Brown owns and trains Beach Treat, who logged his fourth career stakes win and 11th over- all victory in 28 starts. The $52,030 prize from this run pushed his total earnings to $276,472. All four of his stakes wins have come at tracks in Indiana—and last year’s win in the Bob Woodard actually marked his first victorious effort in stakes company.
Coronet Farm bred Beach Treat out of winner Treat Me To Cash. She has produced 100% winners from two starters. Beach Treat is her first stakes winner.
Owner Sheri Miller & trainer Randy Smith were the connections on the 2nd- and 3rd-place finish-
ers. Juan Marquez rode runner-up Beach Mercedes (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully), while 3rd-place Beach Cartel (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee) had Samuel Mendez in the irons.
Completing the field were Abe (Jazz Be First- Magics Born Illusion), Kitty Sixup (Sixes Liaison-Keens Cat), Yadi 1 (Wave Carver-Shez So Special), Stinkin Rich (One Famous Eagle-Miss Scarlet), Rarely A Tres (Tres Seis-Rarely Makes It) and Valiantinecandyrocks (Valiant Hero-Jesses Candy). Beach Bum Eddie and One Smart Jess scratched.
Northern Plains Futurity
THERE HE IS GONE
by Michael Compton
There He Is Gone won the $21,000 Northern Plains Futurity at Chippewa Downs on Aug. 23, running his win streak to four for owner Steve Leonard and trainer Mallory Norton.
Larren Delorme was back aboard the bay gelding after piloting him to a 5-length victory in his Aug.
8 trial heat. The fastest qualifier for the main event, There He Is Gone raced in second position early in the 350-yard finals. In a driving finish, he out footed Chickies First Lady in the final strides to prevail by a neck at the finish. There He Is Gone traveled the distance in :18.190, earning a 90 speed index.
It was the second stakes score for There He
Is Gone, who also annexed the NDQHRA Bred Futurity at North Dakota Horse Park in July. The $10,500 winner’s share from the Northern Plains Futurity increased his bankroll to $22,891 and improved his record to 8-4(2)-0-1.
Randal E. Schwartz bred There He Is Gone out of unraced ND Bunny Jet. She has produced 100% money earners from 10 starters. There He Is Gone is her third stakes winner.
Runner-up Chickies First Lady (Chickie Cherry Cola-Third Copies Yours) turned in a determined effort to just miss under rider Joel Estrada. The filly was the second-fastest qualifier, and suffered her first loss in the race for owner Bryton Dewald and trainer Bill Geditz.
Ramblin Twin Turbo (Ima Ramblin On-Two Thirty Eight) finished third. Also saddled by Geditz and owned by Dewald, the colt was ridden by Shance Birdrattler.
Gabriels Affair (Feature Mr Bojangles-Little Love Affair), Coronas TNC Whiskey (Corona Up-TKO Sassy Zoom), Vals First Corona (Corona B-Miss Salty Val) and Rare Toshky (Captain Toshky-Rare Hula) followed. She May B A Blur was scratched.
