                 Zia Futurity-RG1
HOLLYN BOOTIE
by Danny Camp
Hollyn Bootie secured her first victory, breaking her maiden in the $322,547 Zia Quarter Horse Futurity-G1 at Ruidoso Downs
on July 26.
The two-year-old gray filly came into the
Zia Futurity finals with the seventh fastest qualifying time from the July 10 trials. In that race, Hollyn Bootie broke mid-pack and quickly moved into second place, where she stayed throughout the contest. She finished 1/2-length behind the winner.
In the Grade 1 Zia Futurity finals, Hollyn Bootie stepped away from the four-post much better than her exit in the trials. The filly was out in second and was a head behind the leader at the first call.
It took some encouragement from jockey Tanner Thedford, who was aboard Hollyn Bootie for the first time.
Halfway down the lane near the top of the stretch, Hollyn Bootie moved to the front and was a 1/2-length in front - and that’s the way the filly finished.
Trained by G. Blane Wood, Hollyn Bootie completed the 400 yard contest in :19.856 to earn a career high 91 speed index.
Hollyn Bootie also earned the first place check worth $138,588 for breeders/owners Mark and Annette McCloy, which boosts her
lifetime earnings to $153,078 from just three starts.
Hollyn Bootie ran second in her other only two outs, including her July 10 trial to this event and in the May 29 trials to the Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Futurity. In those trials, she finished a neck behind the winner and qualified to the Mountain Top Juvenile. However, she did not come back to com- pete in the finals.
The McCloy’s bred Hollyn Bootie out of the Jesse James Jr mare Datona Doll, who won the 2016 New Mexico Classic Derby-RG2. Datona Doll earned over $193,000 back in her running days, also finishing second in the Zia Derby-RG2 and third in the Heritage Place Derby-G2. Hollyn Bootie is her first foal.
Woodys Gold (Woodbridge-All About Gold) broke his maiden winning his July
10 Zia Futurity trial heat, in which he went wire-to-wire for a 2 1/4-length score. His effort was good for the ninth fastest clocking. In
the finals, the gelding finished second under Cody Smith for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC and trainer Clinton Crawford.
Woodys Gold previously finished second in his trial to the Mountain Top New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse Futurity-G2, also finishing second in the finals.
Vine Master (Jesse James Jr-Tangled Vines) had won his three previous outs, including the Mountain Top Quarter Horse Juvenile Stakes. He also won his trials to the Zia Futurity and clocked the
second fastest qualifying time. The gelding’s win streak ended in the Zia Futurity finals, where he had to settle for third place money. Vine Master is owned by Cody Cobb. The James Gonzales II trainee had Sergio Becerra Jr. in the irons.
Fly On Down (One Handsome Man-Never The Same) finished in fourth place and was followed across the line by Hatchi Zulu (Zulu Dragon-Effortless Eagle) and Cristom (Jesse James Jr-Alice K White). Ripp (Big Daddy Cartel-Ms Riptide) was moved from eighth
to seventh when Jessies Allstar (Jesse James Jr-Woodys Allatar) was disqualified from sev- enth for repeated bumping. Fanncee and True Romance were both scratched.
