Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1
POWER FADE
by Michael Compton
Power Fade ran her current winning streak to three with a determined victory in
the $70,200 Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa
Futurity-G1 at Fair Meadows on July 25. With Daniel Torres in the irons, Power
Fade broke in second and quickly grabbed the lead away from the gate in the 350-yard fixture.
The filly was hounded the entire journey, first from Mammy Jammer and then from race favorite and fastest qualifier Captain Capi in the late stages.
Power Fade shrugged off all challengers and defeated Captain Capi by a brave nose at the finish, getting the distance in :17.956. Trained by Dee Keener, the final clocking earned an 84 speed index.
The victory marked the second Grade
1 win for the daughter of first-crop sire Painted Turnpike. Power Fade also captured the $136,700 Speedhorse Graham Paint &
Appaloosa Futurity-G1 at Remington Park for her first career win on May 30. Power Fade was dismissed as a 30-1 longshot in
that race since she had not won
a race before that outing, but based on the strength of that effort, she is no longer a secret.
Power Fade was sent off
at odds-on in her trial heat
for the Speedhorse Paint & Appaloosa Futurity at Fair Meadows on July 11, a race she dominated from start to finish, winning by 2 1/4-lengths.
After that strong perfor-
mance, Power Fade was the
2-1 second choice in the main
event, and she didn’t disapoint her followers.
Power Fade made her stakes debut on April 25, finishing ninth, beaten 4-lengths in the
$103,200 American Paint Classic Futurity. With this event, her latest win, Power
Fade improved her record to 7-3(2)-0-2. The $27,729 win- ner’s share of the purse ran her earnings total to $86,885 for owners J. Lloyd Yother and J. Garvan Kelly.
Kelly/Yearsley Equine bred Power Fade out of winner Fade Shot, who was a runner-up in the Tulsa State Fair Stakes. She has produced 100% win- ners from two starters.
“She is a trier, that’s for sure. She doesn’t give up. She is a gutsy filly,” said Yother of
Power Fade who will head to Will Rogers for next engagement. “She didn’t win by much, but she kept going and got the job done.”
