Speedhorse Futurity-G3
HIGH VALUE OF RETURN
by Michael Compton
With nine juveniles vying for top prize in the $137,000 Speedhorse Futurity-G3 at Fair Meadows on July 25, it was the fleet-footed colt High Value Of Return who emerged victorious when the dust settled after the 350-yard dash.
With jockey Kevin Camacho back in the irons after accompanying the sorrel colt, who was the main event’s fastest qualifier, to a nar- row but fast score in his July 10 trial heat, High Value Of Return bounced out of the starting gate alertly in the Speedhorse Futurity. Racing for trainer Fidencio Jimenez, he dueled in the early stages with MH Apollitical Spy and race favorite Spotty Politics before putting away all his rivals en route to a dominating 1 3/4-length triumph over Fear The Dragon, who rallied strongly late to chase the winner across the line.
In scoring the first stakes win of his young career, High Value Of Return stopped the timer in a lively :17.660, good for a speed index of 93.
A homebred for Mark McPhail, High Value Of Return, with the victory, improved his record to four wins from six starts. The $52,060 winner’s share of the purse lifted his earnings to $80,050.
In addition to this
stakes score, High Value Of Return was a finalist in the Remington Park Juvenile on April 18 after a 1/2-length win in his April 3 trial.
“He has a great disposition,” said McPhail about his colt. “In the stall or at the farm, he is really laid back and relaxed. When he goes to the racetrack, he flips a switch. He gets fired up and really wants to run. His mom was the same way. On the farm, she was laid back, then as soon as you pulled up to Remington Park, she was a different horse.”
Winning the Speedhorse Futurity carries some special significance for McPhail since he won the race with a homebred that is currently his only horse in training.
“This was a great win,”
he said. “We planned it four years ago and to see the result is very special. It means a lot to us. It was awesome. When you are facing 10 horses and there are only 23 seconds
separating the top 10, you just cross your fin- gers and hope he gets out of the gate quick.”
Bred in Oklahoma, High Value Of Return is out of the Kelly Kip TB mare Kips Little Clique, a Los Alamitos winner during her racing career. His broodmare sire, Kelly Kip, is a multiple graded stakes-winning Thoroughbred who earned more than $1.1 million in an outstand- ing career on the racetrack. All told, the premier
