Calif. Brds. Sprint Stakes
GOLDEN BOY GONZA
by Tracy Gantz
Jockey Mark Jasso had never won a race at
Los Alamitos, and four-year-old Golden Boy Gonza had never won or placed in a stakes in his lifetime. That made for some pretty long odds in the $25,000 California Breeders Sprint Stakes on July 25. But that didn’t deter either of them, as they rolled to victory.
Seven faced the starter, with Golden Boy Gonza the longest price on the board at 34-1. Jasso broke him first out of the gate, and no one got close throughout the 350 yards. Golden Boy Gonza went wire-to-wire and scored by 3/4-length in :17.412 for a 101 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total lifetime earnings to $50,761.
Enrique Gonzalez’s EG High Desert Farms bred Golden Boy Gonza in California and races him. Jesus Nunez trains the gelding, whose best previous win came in an allowance event.
Golden Boy Gonza is out of EG High Desert homebred Dashways. The mare has produced three winners in four starters.
Juan Leon piloted odds-on favorite Alamode (Kiddy Up-Pie Maid) to second for owner Genaro Martinez and trainer John Cooper. Alamode has won the Mr Jet Moore Handicap, finished second in the Kaweah Bar Handicap-G3, and finished third in the Independence Day Handicap-G3 this year.
Favorite Illusion (Favorite Cartel-Sweetest Illusion), owned by Cream Of The Crop Inc., trained by Juan Aleman, and ridden by Armando Cervantes, ran third. The 3-year-old gelding finished second in the 2019 California Breeders Freshman Stakes.
Completing the field were Deceiver (Foose-Fool The Boys), Chicks Fayvorite (Favorite Cartel-Chicks Tell), Ali Babe Foose (Foose-Babe On The Fly),
and Sacred Nation (Favorite Cartel-Tahma Hawk). Tequila Sangria was scratched.

SHIZA QUEEN
by Michael Cusortelli
Asharp break from the 10-post helped odds- on favorite Shiza Queen score a wire-to-wire victory in the $39,750 Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs on July 26.
Saddled by Martha Maldonado for owner Pedro Mena, Shiza Queen defeated ALS Dynasty by 1-length while making her 330-yard trip in :16.553. Jose Guzman rode the homebred daughter of the First Down Dash stallion Maknmoves, who posted
a 102 speed index and banked the $18,285 winner’s share of the purse. The filly’s bankroll totals $20,085 from two outs.
Shiza Queen set the fastest qualifying time with her 2-length win in the third of eight Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity trials on July 12, a race which marked her official career debut.
The filly is out of Uintas Queen, a half sister to Diamond Classic Futurity-RG3 winner Proudest Bandolero, who has produced 100% money earners from three starters, including stakes placed Unitas Legendary. Shiza Queen is her first stakes winner.
Als Dynasty (Jr Dynasty Mountain-Bf Pieces Of April) was 2nd and earned $7,950 for his owners, Ron Moosman & Kyle Gray. Jesus Valenzuela rode the homebred gelding for trainer Riley Moosman.

Utah Bred Futurity
NO HESITATION
by Michael Cusortelli
Second-fastest qualifier No Hesitation broke sec- ond and led at every subsequent call to win the $39,750 Utah Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs on July 25. Trained by Riley Moosman for owner Jim Nebeker and aided by a reported 5-mph tail wind, No Hesitation covered 350 yards in :17.366 under jockey Jesus Valenzuela, crossing the wire a neck in front. The gelding earned a 103 speed index and the $18,285 winner’s share of the purse.
Raced exclusively in the Intermountain region, No Hesitation has won two of three starts and has lifetime earnings of $21,400.
The gelding made his local debut with a second- place finish, a neck behind fastest qualifier Executive Temptation, in the last of four Utah Bred Futurity trials on July 11.
Richard S. Frandsen bred No Hesitation out
of winner Mia Ta Fame, who finished third in the Silver Dollar Futurity-RG2. She has produced 100% money earners from 10 starters, including top earner and multiple stakes winner Decati, who set a New Track Record at 350 yards. No Hesitation is her third stakes winner.
