The race for the Mexico Futurity Consolation prize was held among those who obtained the qualification times between 11 to 20 in
the general list of qualifiers held on April 26, at 250 yards. The assigned prize was 254,625 pesos ($16,975 US dollars, approximately).
By the reported trial times it was deemed a very close race, with the best time being 13.189 seconds obtained by El C Mayo Shake. At the other extreme was a time of 13.267 seconds by Three Carano.
It was an interesting finals due to the clean race that developed and the clear dominance of the filly Rg Maléfika Poster (#2), who from the start took charge of the lead and maintained
it with the assistance of Jose Angel Ambrosio Median. The filly crossed the finish with 1 1/2-lengths in front of El Jamaikino (#7), with an impressive time of :12.95 (SI 98) - a notori- ously better time than the futurity’s champion of 13.06 seconds.
In the qualifiers, the filly ran in heat #2 where she came in third under the leader- ship of Mario Alberto Lopez. Their 13.195 seconds positioned them at 12 in the general list of times. In the consolation, she broke her maiden with a notable improvement from her previous time.
She is owned by Rancho Las Gaviotas, located in the state of Morelos, where she is trained by Alfredo Rabanal Salinas. “In the days leading up to the qualifiers, we had to work hard to correct the behavior of the filly on the track with the support of Dr. Alejandro Mena,
a specialist in natural horsemanship. On the instructions of the stewardess, we had to give an outstanding work out on the track a week before the qualifying races to authorize her entry and participation in the futurity,” said the trainer. “We liked her performance in the first stage, but the second one was really outstanding,” he said.
The filly, originally named Danny Spana, was born in Sinaloa from the broodstock of Cuadra La Presita and presented in the 2014 Selecta Yearling Auction where she was bid
for 90,000 pesos ($6,923 US, approximately). She is a daughter of the stallion Danny Cartel and out of La Chuchena, descendant of This Snow Is Royal. Danny Cartel was third in the Golden State Derby-G1 and a finalist in the Independence Day Handicap, earning $45,653. In the record of La Chuchena there are no official races, but it is widely known she partici- pated in match-races in the State of Sonora, Mexico, with good results.
With this victory, 152,775 pesos (US $10,185 approximately) were credited to the earnings of RG Maléfika Cartel, whom
we will see in action at the upcoming classics for indi- viduals of his generation and conditioning.
Second place went to El
Jamaikino (Danny Cartel
- Double Bar Dash), bred
from Cuadra La Presita and
well assisted by jockey Jose Trinidad Diaz for Rancho El Yukon and trainer Victor Manuel Diaz Gonzalez.
Moon Horse Ryon (Sea Horse Corona - Moon Down Ryon) placed third under the reins of Eddi Cuellar. He runs for Cuadra Los Cascabeles and was saddled by Antonio Martinez Paz.
Also participating: Pluma Fina Gc (Native Jewel Dh –Fast Movin Maddy), Sea Corona Cash (Sea Horse Corona – Streakin With Cash), Tres Carano (Tres Ruby – Princess Carano), El C Mayo Shake (Mayo First – Chile Shake), Red Queens Corona (Mr Jess Corona – Red Queens Secret), Miss Jess Stoli (Jess Heavenly – Lady Stoli) & J Genuine (Jess The Man – Genuine First Down).
