The sire of Tiny Circus is 1966 Co- Champion Aged Stallion Tiny Watch, who is by Anchor Watch TB and out of Clabber Tiny by Clabber II by Clabber.
1941 World Champion Clabber is another key in our look at the Barron/ Nichols breeding program. He was purchased by A.B. Nichols from breeder Frank Smith and was used for ranch work, rodeo and as
a racehorse. Clabber was sold in California
to Vessels Stallion Farm and became the foundation sire of the Vessels racehorse program where he sired Clabber II out of the great mare Do Good.
This brings us back to Casey’s Ladylove, the dam of Caseys Charm. We have seen
the versatility of this family of horses. Here
is the pedigree behind the versatility. Casey’s Ladylove is by Casey’s Poco by Poco Dun. Poco Dun is by Poco Bueno and out of Pretty Doll by Pretty Buck. The dam of Casey’s Poco is Miss Casey by Tadpole by Red Dog and Miss Casey is out of Nedra by Red Dog. Casey’s Poco is the sire of Champion Poco Erna.
Lady Diane is the dam of Casey’s Ladylove and is by MC Rusty by Joe Tom MC. Lady Diane’s dam is Chigger Barnes
by Joe Tom MC, who is by Joe Hancock. Lady Diane is the dam of four foals, all sired by Casey’s Poco. They include Champion Our Goldie, who has a Superior in Western Pleasure and has earned 304 Palomino Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) halter and performance points, and Ladys Stubby, a PHBA Hall of Fame member with 653 halter and performance points.
INBREEDING TO SUPERIOR FEMALES
Dale Barron and Ken Nichols indicated early on that they believed in mare power in the pedigree and when they found Fab, they were attracted to his being double bred to Casey’s Ladylove. This brings us to the breeding theory of “inbreeding to superior females.”
The inbreeding to superior females is
a theory promoted by the Thoroughbred pedigree analysts Rommy Faversham and the late Leon Rassmussen. This theory comes about by inbreeding to a common female ancestor within the first five generations of the pedigree of the individual.
This breeding theory has been seen down through the years with a modern version coming through the 1990 Kentucky Derby and the 1990 Breeder’s Cup Classic winner Unbridled. He has sired the winners of over $48 million on the racetrack and carries a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 to Aspidistra. This mare is the dam of the speedy Dr. Fager, who set a world record for the mile in 1:32 1/5. Aspidistra is the dam of Champion Ta Wee,

Driftwood, shown here with Katy Peake, was a match racehorse (known as Speedy) that became a successful roping horse and a sire of outstanding performance horses. Driftwood was owned by Ken Nichols’ grandfather, who bought him off the track and started him roping.
a full sister to Aforethought, the sire of the All American Futurity winners/Champions Timeto Thinkrich and Hot Idea.
An added pedigree note: The dam
of Timeto Thinkrich is Chronometer,
a daughter of Tiny Charger, who is out
of Clabber Tiny by Clabber II, and Chronometer is out of Rhoda Watch by Anchor Watch TB, the sire of Tiny Watch.
We see this linebreeding pattern in Quarter Horses. A prime example is the running mare Leota W. She won 14 of her 16 starts at two and put her sire, Leo, on the map as a sire of runners. Leo is by Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3. His dam is Little Fanny by Joe Reed P-3. The dam of
Joe Reed P-3 is the famous Cajun-runner Della Moore. The dam of Leota W is Swamp Angel by Gran de Oro, a son of Little Joe. The dam of Gran de Oro is Della Moore. This makes Leota W an inbreeding to a superior female with a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 X 3 to Della Moore.
1953 AQHA High Point Halter Horse Monsieur Joe is the product of linebreeding
to the sisters Lady Coolidge and Dixie Beach. Monsieur Joe is by Red Star Joe by Little Jodie, a son of Dixie Beach. His dam is Westmoreland by Bert P-227, a son of Lady Coolidge. This gives Monsieur Joe
a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to these two mares. Monsieur Joe counts among his foals Champion/1961 Hi-Point Calf Roping Mare Miss Monsieur. Monsieur Joe serves
as an example of the linebreeding to these two mares as it is very common to find them together in the pedigree. Almost like you can’t have one without the other.
THE BREEDING PROGRAM
Dale Barron and Ken Nichols were not familiar with the “inbreeding to superior females” theory, but they understood it and that led to their reinforcing the role of the mare in their breeding program.
“I am going to roll back the clock to my grandpa’s time, and he said that a lot of people didn’t believe in mares and just
