                                 Retama Park Derby
DASH QUICK PERRY
by Danny Camp
True to form, Dash Quick Perry won his July 15 trial heat by a whopping 1 3/4-lengths and set the fastest mark, then came back and won the finals to the Retama Park Derby. There was $156,600 was on the line as the gelded son of Down N Dash broke well from the one post. The 3-5 favorite spotted the field 1/2-length at the start, but
under the urging of Francisco Calderon who has ridden him in all but one of his 12 starts, they quickly regained the lead.
As they were coming down the stretch, they pulled away and dominated the field, finishing 1 1/2-lengths in front in :19.698 for the 400-yards and a 104 speed index against a 12mph head wind.
The $62,640 winner’s share takes Dash Quick Perry’s earn- ings to $144,933, the majority of which has been banked this year.
His race record is 7 wins from of 12 races, and
he has won his last 3 in a row for breeder/owner Pete A. Scarmardo and trainer Leon Bard. Dash Quick Perry also won this year’s Sam Houston Stakes wire-to-wire by 1 1/2-lengths and was 2nd in the $197,700 Sam Houston Derby-G3.
“Pete Scarmardo is a great owner” said Bard. “He has lots and lots
of horses. Dash Quick Perry is a little horse, but he’s really nice. He runs good fresh and the older he gets, the better he gets. This horse is just now starting to mature. He’s quiet around the barn and nice to gallop. Soundness has never been an issue, he has never has a needle stuck in a joint. He’s a good gate horse, but doesn’t particularly like the one hole. We are looking forward to the Texas Classic Derby for his next out.”
Dash Quick Perry is out of stakes placed Quickid Perry, winner of over $56,000. The mare has produced 7 starters/winners/ROM earners, including stakes placed/Texas Hi-Point Three-Year-Old Gelding Kid Can Dash. Dash Quick Perry is the top earner of the brood.
As And Js (Apollitical Jess-Adolph Tres Knockout) was bumped but flew on the end to take 2nd under Gerardo Garrido for Leonardo Alcala & trainer Juvenal Licona-Vazquez. DM La Jolla (Hiclass La Jolla-Dm Bella Mia) ran a steady 3rd for Donna G. Mushinski and trainer Kie Muchinski under rider Dale Beaty. Followed by FDP Rock Solid (Rock Solid Jess-First Down Payment), Vigilante (Coronas Fast Dash-
Duck Mea Running), Good Captain Pepper (Captain Courage-Poise N Pepper) & JMF Dashing (Tempting Dash-Shamefully). Feature Moonflash & Tac My Time were scratched.
