Boyd Morris Memorial H.
SPECIALS JESS
by John Moorehouse
After opening his season with second- and fourth- place finishes in stakes races at Remington Park, Specials Jess found the winner’s circle in the $70,000 Boyd Morris Memorial on May 29. With the vic- tory, the four-year-old gelding tallied his first stakes win and improved his overall record to 5-3-2 in 12 starts. Owner Alexia Mehrle banked a $39,000 prize, upping the career coffers of the gelding to $115,505.
Trained by Kasey Willis, Specials Jess broke well from the 2-post and led by a head by the first call. Special Jess widened the gap at every remaining call, pulling away during the final yards to win by a 1 1/4-length margin.
Making his first out aboard Specials Jess, Roberto Valero navigated the gelding over the
400 yards in :19.492, registering a 96 speed index. Specials Jess was the favorite at the betting window, going off at odds of almost 5-2 at post time.
Specials Jess has 2nd-place finishes in this year’s SLM Big Daddy Stakes & last year’s OHA Mystery Derby, was 3rd in the Altoona Derby, and 4th in the 2016 Mr Jet Moore Stakes-RG3. A.C. Taylor bred Specials Jess & owns the gelding’s dam, Special Anywhere, who won the 2007 Cherokee Bonus Challenge. Special Anywhere now has produced 3 stakes winners and 1 stakes placer among 4 starters.
Tempting Valor (Tempting Dash-Thanks Jens) was 2nd under Jorge Torres for Matt Ratliff & Vicki D. Tebow and trainer Stacy Charette-Hill. Larry Abney trains 3rd-placed Finche (Tres Seis-Doctor Prospector) and co-owns the veteran gelding with Chris Sheehy. Oscar Delgado was up. Followed by Novas Gold (Gold Medal Jess-Hot Nova), BP Run Cartel Run, Sexy And I Know It B (Apollitical Jess- Sheza Lilbituino), Blazin Hero (Valiant Hero-Blazin Fire), Rocketair (Jumpn-Rivanne), Load Your Guns (Corona Cartel-Dashing Little Reba) & Admiral Zoomwalt (Shazoom-Tellin It All).
Easy Date Handicap
POLLITICAL SCORPION
by John Moorehouse
Pollitical Scorpion posted her first stakes win, beat- ing Candy Cartels Cat by a nose in the $70,000 Easy Date Stakes at Remington Park on May 29. A
three-year-old filly home-bred by Jahree Standridge, Pollitical Scorpion won for the fifth time in 12 career starts & logged her second victory in four outs this season. Pollitical Scorpion already had black type, thanks to a pair of in-the-money futurities last year.
Candy Cartels Cat was the heavy betting favorite at less than even-money odds, but Pollitical Scorpion beat the favored filly as well as the odds. Pollitical Scorpion broke on top from the outside starting gate, yielded the advantage to Candy Cartels Cat and then chased down the rival during the stretch.
Luis Villafranco trains Pollitical Scorpion, who covered the 350 yards in :17.330 and posted a 94 speed index with Mario Delgado aboard.
Standridge also owns Sting Scorpion Sting, the dam of Pollitical Scorpion. Sting Scorpion Sting also holds a stakes victory in the 2006 Quicksilver Stakes at Remington Park. Three of her five foals have made starts - all money earners, but Pollitical Scorpion becomes the first stakes winner in the brood.
Candy Cartels Cat (Red Storm Cat-Candy Cartel) finished 2nd for PV Quarter Horse Farms, LLC, a Clinton Crawford trainee who had Jose Montoya in the irons. Cartel Rosie (Carters Cartel-Long Stemmed Roses) placed 3rd for Stone Chase Stables, LLC. Kasey Willis is the trainer and Roberto Valero did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was JS Abel Dasher (The Louisiana Cartel-Shaken Easy
Dash), DQ’d from 4th to 5th Nanny McFeebe (Furyofthewind-Sexy N Saucy), Boozin And
Cruzin (Tempting Dash-Penelope Cruzin), Elegant Okey (Apollo TB-Okey Design), Redneck Sis (SC Chiseled In Stone-Dads Sassy Sissy) and Great Grace (Apollitical Jess-Reloaded And Ready). Shaken Pappasito scratched.
FL Lady Bug Stakes
DICECAPADES
by Michael Cusortelli
Dicecapades kept her perfect record intact as she stretched her distance out with a victory in the $70,000 FL Lady Bug Stakes for Oklahoma-bred
juveniles at Remington Park on May 29.
Ridden by James Flores, Dicecapades covered
330 yards in :16.715, and her margin of victory was 1 1/4-lengths over Senator Teller. Gerry McLean prepped Dicecapades for owner Terry McLean of Claremore, Oklahoma.
Dicecapades was coming off of a 1-length win in the 300-yard Laico Bird Stakes on April 23, and prior to that had a 1/2-length 250-yard maiden victory. The filly was bred by the Culver City, California-based partnership of J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley, and she sold for $6,000 at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale. A winner of all three
of her outs, Dicecapades has banked $91,618 with the addition of the $39,000 winner’s share from the FL Lady Bug Stakes.
Although the filly is the first winner from four starters out of multiple winner Dicey Riley, the mare is the dam of 100% money earners. Dicecapades traces back to her fourth dam, Classy Mirage TB, a New Jersey-bred Storm Bird mare who won five graded stakes in New York from 1993-95, including the 1995 Ballerina Handicap-G1 at Saratoga.
2nd-placed Senator Teller (Louisiana Senator-Special Teller) races for Alvaro Ibarra Jr., a Javier Contreras trainee who was ridden by Armando Ramirez. JK Running Horses’ Kates Wagon (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Pretty Girl Kate) was third under Daniel Torres for trainer Kenny Laymon. Followed by Perrys A Hero (Valiant Hero- Perry Story), Barue (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Leesa), Darker Tint (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Just Wanna Be Me), Bout Tree Fiddy (Ivory James-Hollie Jollie), El Chanconkle (Sean Roy-Talk To Much), Hailofadasher (The Wranglers Image-Giacoma Jewel) & Major Freight (Freighttrain B-Romancin Ashley).
