STURGIS
by Michael Cusortelli
Sturgis, a sorrel overo Oklahoma-bred gelding owned by Paint Horse Queens, earned his first career stakes victory in the $38,600 PSBA American Paint Derby-G1 at Remington Park on April 30. Conditioned by Dee Keener, Sturgis covered 400 yards in :19.897 under jockey Jose Vega, 1/2-length in front of Royal Snowman. The $14,668 winner’s share of the purse increased Sturgis’s bankroll to $47,734. Sturgis was just 13 days removed from a win in a 330-yard maiden at Remington Park. Campaigned in Oklahoma and Texas, Sturgis has now won two of 11 races. The gelding’s resume includes a second in last year’s Colors of the Alamo Futurity and a third in the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1.
Based in Coweta, Oklahoma, Paint Horse Queens is a partnership of Traci Wright, the wife of Sturgis breeder Steven Wright, and Wendy Ingersol Keener, the wife of Sturgis’ trainer.
The gelding’s dam, Biker Chick, is a multiple winner who finished second in the 2007 Graham Paint Futurity-G1 at Remington Park. She is the dam of 4 starters, and Sturgis joins Champion Ape Hanger and additional stakes winner Super Glide Harley.
Runner-up Royal Snowman (SM Country Snowman-Sheza Royal Secret) was ridden by Mario Delgado for owner Todd Lacey, who also trained
the gelding. Charles R. Leggett’s Imahotchicken (SF Royal Quick Flash-Game Chicken), the 19-10 favorite, ran third. Ricky Ramirez rode the filly for trainer Dee Keener. Followed by Barracuda (Judys Lineage-SB Kiss This Goodbye), Eyem Savvy (SF Royal Quick Flash-Eysa Savvy Queen), Macies Dos Poruno (Dos Poruno-Snow Me The Paddick), DTL Head Honcho (SF Royal Quick Flash-Okey Dokey Chic), Awsome Barney (Awesome Chrome-Shero), Rebels Roan (Texas Six-Jess For Jim) & Texas Snowman (SM Country Snowman-Just Call Me Lonesome).

DASHIN JJ
by John Moorehouse
Dashin JJ scored a surprise victory in the Mister Lewie Paint & Appaloosa Memorial-G1 at Remington Park on May 20. A 16-1 longshot at
the betting window, the four-year-old Paint geld- ing prevailed in the $32,500 event for Paints and Appaloosas.
Ray Enlow bred, owns and trains Dashin JJ, who reached the winner’s circle for the sixth time in 14 attempts. The gelding now holds four wins in stakes company, three of them in graded races. Enlow banked a $19,392 payday with this win, which pushed Dashin JJ’s total earnings to the cusp of six figures at $96,779.
Dashin JJ drew the 5-post, broke second from the gates, and quickly seized the lead. Painted Turnpike, the heavy betting favorite, battled with Dashin JJ for the entirety of the 400 yards, but the longshot gelding dug in during the stretch to reach the finish line sporting a 1/2-length margin of vic- tory. William Thomason drew the riding assign- ment, navigating Dashing JJ over the 300 yards in :19.633 to register a 93 speed index.
David Stone bred Dashing JJ, who is the first stakes winner out of the 100% Quarter Horse/Paint money earning producer Dashin Di.
Painted Turnpike APHA (PYC Paint Your Wagon QH-High Class Turnpike) was 2nd under Cody Smith for Nolan Pevehouse & trainer Matt Whitekiller. That snapped a 5-race win streak for the colt. Major Mac APHA (Judys Lineage-Peggys Bouquet QH) finished 3rd for owner/trainer Brian Muse. James Flores was in the irons. Followed by Texas Silk APHA (Texas Six-Judys Silk), Cant Be Caught ApHC (With Intent-Unique Form QH), Southern Snow APHA (Southern Corona QH-Snow Warning) & If Ur Buyn Im Flyn APHA (SM Country Snowman-Expressions In Stone QH). LONG LOST BUDDY
by John Moorehouse
It didn’t take long for Long Lost Buddy to break his maiden. The two-year-old gelding accomplished that feat and earned black type, in his second
career out when he prevailed in the $23,100 Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity at Pocatello Downs on May 22.
Racing for RTM Stables LLC, Ben McKinney and Richard Gardner, Long Lost Buddy brought home a $9,240 payday, pushing his total bankroll to $9,315.
The gelding made a dominant performance, going wire-to-wire. Long Lost Buddy broke on top from the outside starting gate in the nine-horse field, built a 1-length lead by the first call, maintained that advantage going into the stretch, and coasted to a 1 1/4-length finish. Long Lost Buddy covered the 330- yards in :16.982 for a 99 speed index while running into a 10 mph headwind. Mark Hanson is the trainer and Uriel Dominguez was in the irons.
Steve Burns, DVM bred Long Lost Buddy and owns the gelding’s dam, Remember The Cartel, an unraced 2005 mare who has produced 100% money earners from four starters. Long Lost Buddy is the first stakes winner out of his dam, although his half-brother, Separate Cartel, is stakes-placed.
RTM Stables LLC, McKinney and Gardner
also own the runner-up, A Cartel Hustle. Another Hanson trainee, A Cartel Hustle (Favorite Cartel- Mothers Gift) had Nakia Ramirez aboard. Pretty Pretty Pleez (Hez Fast As Cash-Miss Flyin Feature) took third by a head for CMH Welding, LLC. Ferrall Cunningham is the trainer and Never Marin did
