Born Runner Classic
BEACH CARTEL
by Michael Compton
Beach Cartel is fond of the surface at Indiana Grand Racecourse, and that fact wasn’t lost on the wagering public in the $75,000 Born Runner
Classic on May 28. Last year’s Indiana Horse of the Year, Beach Cartel, owned seven wins from 10 life- time starts going into the race, all at Indiana Grand, and the 4-year-old gelding promptly justified his odds-on favoritism with a commanding performance in the 8th running of the 400-yard fixture.
Ridden by Rodney Prescott, Beach Cartel started cleanly and on top from his inside post and simply dominated his 9 rivals from start to finish. The gray Indiana-bred received every call and crossed the finish a 1/2-length winner over a fast-closing WH Design by Dash and jockey Cristian Esqueda. Beach Cartel stopped the timer in the new stakes-record time of :19.969 for a 92 speed index. A homebred for Sheri Miller of Shipshewana, Indiana, and saddled by Randy Smith, the winner is out of a 100% money/ ROM producer and is a full brother to stakes winner Beach Runner. The $41,250 winner’s share of the Born Runner Classic boosted Beach Cartel’s career earnings above the $200,000 mark to $219,483.
Runner-up WH Design by Dash (Brimmstone-Fast Mans Dash) races for Julia Rae Martin & is trained by Paul Martin. Harold Collins piloted 3rd-place finisher Chilled Six Pack (Chilled Corona-Six Packin Robin) for Pattie Marshall & Craig Zeneberg and trainer Anthony Cunningham.
