El Moro de Cumpas Futurity
STARZ POWER
by Danny Camp
It was futurity time in Douglas, Arizona, with the running of the $40,000 El Moro De Cumpas Futurity at Cochise County Fair on May 22.
Starz Power won the finals in much the same way he won his April 24 trial heat in which he broke well and finished 3/4-lengths on top for the third fastest qualifying time.
In the finals, Starz Power broke from the 2-post mid-pack. With a gritty performance and under the encouragement of rider Jarell James, Starz Power crossed the wire a nose in front to stop the timer at :15.640 and earn a speed index of 97.
With the $24,000 winner’s share, the sorrel gelding has now earned a total of $25,120 and is unbeaten at two for two.
Every trainer will tell you it takes a team to win races, as will the folks that make up Starz Powers team - owner Stan Munro and trainer Umberto Belloc.
Starz Power was bred in New Mexico by Stanley Munro and is out of the dam Ima Gold Cartel, who has produced 100% money earners from her five starters. Starz Power is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
The second place check was cashed by
The Prince Corona (Royal Quick Dash- Tellherwerehopeful). The colt had the lead for a bit, but drifted in and jockey Rodolfo Arvizu had to straighten him. The colt is owned by Rey Moreno and trained by Tomas D Moreno.
Fastest qualifier A Chick In A Daze (Mex) (Dog Daze Afternoon-A Willing Chic) won third place for his connections that include owner Rey Moreno and trainer Tomas D Moreno. Martin Osuna had the riding assignment.
Followed by Cowboys Dynasty (Fdd Dynasty- Mexican Radio), K Kardashian (Wave Carver-Jjh Bugs Rascal), Zoomin Dasher (Rebs Royal Dasher-Guitar Superstition) & Go Seis (Tres Seis-Go Veva).
El Moro de Cumpas Derby
JESS CALL ME FANCY
by Danny Camp
Cochise County Fair in Douglas, Arizona was the place to be for the El Moro de Cumpas Derby on May 21. The 350 yard race was worth a
total of $30,000, and the eight fastest qualifiers from the April 24 trials lined up in the finals over a fast track. Jess Call Me Fancy had dominated many of her races before in the past and had won her trial to this race for the 2nd fastest qualifying time to the finals. She stepped away from the 4-post mid-pack. As we all know, the cream comes to the top and that was true on this day. Jess Call Me Fancy found her stride and ran a fine race under jockey L. R. Yescas, finishing 1-length in front.
This stakes victory makes five wins out of 12 outs for the filly, and she has won her last three of four starts. She is definitely on the upswing in her career. With the $16,500 winner’s share, she has made $29,388 for her owner/trainer/breeder Raymond S Felix.
Jess Call Me Fancy was bred in Arizona out of winner Monique Quick Cash, a 100% winner/ROM producer. Jess Call Me Fancy is her first stakes winner.
Fastest qualifier Betini (Stoli-Jacque Seis) was a bit tardy at the break, but rider T D Moreno encour- aged his mount and they were able to get up and took second place for owner Joel Merino and trainer Tomas D Moreno.
Sweet Se Puede (One Sweet Jess-Move Me First), who had a history of eratic running, ran straight and true under Jarell James, who was aboard him for the first time. The gelding is owned by Jorge Preciado Nunez and trained by Armando Castellanos.
Shoulda Kissed Me (Fdd Dynasty-Love My Corona), Azucar Cayenne (Brindis Por Cayenne- Shakin Sugar), Black Flag Warning (Corona Cartel- Little Surfer), Bugatti Veyron (One Sweet Jess-Lurid) and Im Flyin (First Class Sign-Fly Hawkish) completed the field.
El Moro de Cumpas Stakes
HEZA DYNASTY
by John Moorehouse
Veteran gelding Heza Dynasty emerged late to win the $50,000 El Moro De Cumpas Stakes at the Cochise County Fair in Douglas, Arizona, on May 22.
Carlos Manuel Reyes owns Heza Dynasty, who was making his 17th career start. The six-year-old gelding logged his fifth victory with this win and improved to 3-0 thus far in 2016. He earned a $25,500 payday that swelled his bankroll to $43,244.
The betting favorite at post time, Heza Dynasty lived up to the expectations after winning his April 23 trial for the second-fastest qualifying time.
Running second at the first call, Heza Dynasty made his move for the lead midway through the race and ran in front by a head as he entered the stretch. With jockey Martin Osuna in the irons, Heza Dynasty widened the gap, pulling away to win by a length.
No time or speed index was recorded on the victorious 400-yard trip by Heza Dynasty, who was prepped by trainer Tomas Moreno.
Bred by the Vessels Stallion Farm, LLC, Heza Dynasty becomes the second stakes winner and top earner out of his dam, Da One. The other stakes winner, This Is Da One, won the 2012 Arapahoe Express Stakes. Da One has 10 total foals and 8 of them have made starts to date. All are money earners.
Rum Chata (Volcom-Hals Streakin Temper), who set a New Track Record winning his trial heat, finished a strong 1 1/4-lengths clear in second under Mauro Salcedo for owner Paola Torres & trainer Ramon Bazurto. Corona The Cat (Corona Cartel-Higher Fire) took third place. The colt is owned by Ugo De La Torre and the San Gregorio Racing Stable, Inc. Mario Loza
is the trainer and Rodolfo Arvizu was aboard. Followed by Magical Righter (Righter-BF Fantastic Dream), RGR Down N Dirty (Hugo Streakin-Down Effort), Sea Panther Run (Panther Mountain-Yach Sea), Trip To The Jungle (Panther Mountain-Heavenly Trip) & Dos Tocallos (Jess A Chicks-Fancy Fancy Fancy TB).
