When we look at the pedigree of Dasha Freda and her foals, we see the modern racing Quarter Horse. But when we delve into and trace this line back, we come to the area in Arizona around Safford.
Jenny Diver (shown here), who comes
from the Cute Trick line, was bred to Beduino to get AQHA Champion Sire and multiple stakes winner Illusivo.
Cute Kiss (shown here), a stakes placed daughter
of Cute Trick who was sired by 3-time AQHA World Champion Go Man Go, was purchased by the Gentry Brothers and became a part of their broodmare band.
of such outstanding Thoroughbreds as Blue Larkspur, Balladier, Bee Mac, Better Self, Relic and Busher.
While delving into the Be Sure Now and Snedigar connection, I received a note from Lee Jones. Jones, who has been involved with racing, rodeo and ranching, stated that Be Sure Now was purchased after Snedigar sold Three Bars to Sid Vail.
Be Sure Now was a stakes placed runner with seconds in the Hollywood Premier Handicap, the Pacific Handicap, and the Labor Day Stakes. He won 10 of his 45 starts with 10 seconds and 8 thirds. He earned $52,660 on the track.
Be Sure Now was a good sire and his foals were represented by horses like Steamed Up, winner of the Phoenix Derby, and she is an AQHA Dam of Distinction with foals like the Champion Whataway To Go. Another
of his foals is Segura Miguel. This horse was the winner of the 1957 Southwest Futurity, the first “produce” stakes where instead of the sire’s foals being nominated, the dam’s foals were nominated to run in the race. Some of the other mares whose foals were nominated were Shue Fly, Hy Dale and Woven Web (Miss Princess).
The pedigree of Be Sure Now has an interesting pattern. He shows a plan by Idle Hour Stock Farm to inbreed to the Domino and Ben Brush cross and then outcross
that through mares like Vaila, who was a granddaughter of the mare Padua.
Be Sure Now was sired by War Admiral, the Triple Crown winner by Man O’War. The dam of War Admiral was Brushup by Sweep. Sweep was sired by Ben Brush and out of Pink Domino by Domino. The dam of Be Sure Now was Boys I’m It by North Star III. Her dam was Blind Date by Black Toney. Black Toney was sired by Peter Pan by Commando by Domino and he was
out of Belgravia by Ben Brush. The dam of Blind Date was Vaila by Fariman. Vaila was out of Padilla by Macheath and Padilla was out of Padua.
Thus through War Admiral, whose dam was Brushup by Sweep and he was sired
by Ben Brush and out of a daughter of Domino, we have linebreeding to Domino and Ben Brush through Black Toney, the sire of Blind Date, the dam of Boys I’m It. Then, we throw in the outcross to Vaila, a granddaughter of Padua.
The purchase of Padua and her blood’s introduction to the Idle Hour Stock Farm has an interesting twist. According to Abram S. Hewitt in his famous book The Great Breeders And Their Methods, Bradley sent trainer Cliff Hammond to buy bloodstock during a period of depressed prices. Hewitt notes the “poor pedigree” of Padua. Despite this, she and her granddaughter Vaila came to America and, as they say, the rest is history as they became an important part of the Idle Hour Stock Farm.
Cute Trick would produce five foals with four starters that earned three ROM. All three ROM have a AAA or 90 speed index or above. Her leading money winner was Suki Tadre by Royal Bar. This mare earned $68,360 winning the Rocky Mountain QH Futurity and the Sunland Park QH Derby. Suki Tadre is the dam of three foals with two ROM, including Jenny Diver. Jenny Diver is the dam of Illusivo by Beduino. Illusivo
is the winner of $110,757 with wins in the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3 and the Bandera Downs Derby.
Cute Kiss, a stakes placed daughter of Cute Trick, was placed in the La Pitahaya Derby. She won four of her nine starts with two thirds and earnings of $25,790. She ran eighth in the 1969 All American Futurity, which was won by Easy Jet.
The sire of Cute Kiss was 3-time AQHA Racing World Champion Go Man Go. He ran 47 races with 27 wins in such stakes as the PCQHRA Futurity and the Autumn Championship. Go Man Go sired runners
The Gentry Brothers’ famous mare
Such An Easy Effort, shown here winning the 1987 Denim N Diamonds Futurity-G1, is the dam of 2-time Champion Deelish.
2-time Champion Deelish, shown winning the 2000 Go Man Go Handicap, is out of Such An Easy Effort and by First Down Dash.
