                                 West Texas Maturity-G2
KLASSIC STRAWFLY
by Danny Camp
Age is just a number and like a fine wine, Klassic Strawfly is getting better with age.
At 11, he put the youngsters to shame in the West Texas Maturity-G2 at Sunland Park on March 10.
Klassic Strawfly broke mid-pack from the 7-gate under Alejandro Medellin and advancing to 3rd in the stretch. The sorrel gelding remained best and finished a head in front, crossing the wire first in :19.565 for the 400 yards for an 88 speed index. That win earned
his connections the $54,103
winner’s share of the purse and
boosted his lifetime earnings
to $628,924. Klassic Strawfly
now holds a race record of an
incredible 18(5)-11(1)-11(3)
from 97 outs including wins
in the Namehimastreaker NM
Classic Challenge-RG1, Jimmy
Drake Stakes-RG3 (twice) and
the Moon Flash Maturity.
Owned by Yaneth Cabrera, Klassic Strawfly was
bred by Ron Stephens in New Mexico out of graded-stakes placed winner A Classic Song.
She has produced 100% money earners from
six starters, including stakes finalist La Vispa. New Mexico Hi-Point Aged Gelding Klassic Strawfly is her first stakes winner and top earner.
“I’m so excited because I won a saddle,” said Alfredo Gomez, who trains Klassic Strawfly. “It’s the first new saddle I’ve ever had! This
horse is the poster child of class. He gallops like a dream and is a great, great horse. A couple of hours before the race, I was worried because he was so calm and quiet and, even in the paddock, he was very calm.
“This horse is so cool, after the race there were kids in the stall with him, petting him while he munched his hay,” Gomez added. “I am going to try and talk the owners into entering the Big
Daddy Stakes at Remington. I know that comes up pretty quick, but nobody will believe how sound this horse is and that’s a 550, and that’s his best distance.”
JM Apollo (Louisiana Senator-In His Dreams) finished second under Esgar Ramirez for owner J&M Racing and Farm and trainer Shae Cox. May Be Fantastic SA (Fantastic Corona-Darlin Treis) finished third under Emilio Tapia for owner Orlando Guerrero and trainer Ubaldo Guerrero. Followed by Walken To The Moon (Make It Anywhere-Apollo Moonwalker), Rattle N Battle (Apollitical Jess- Tinys Corona Queen), Flare For Ivory (Ivory James-Special Phoebe), SF Hot Pass (Ivory James-Passem Up Perry), Fine Oak Corona (Coronas Prospect-Like A Fine Oak) & Once Over (Walk Thru Fire-Look Her Over). GBH Gunsmoke scratched.
