Eastex Stakes-G2
BODACIOUS EAGLE
By Tracy Gantz
With only one victory as a 4-year-old last year, Bodacious Eagle might have seemed a good candidate for retirement. But trainer Trey Wood thought a rest might put Bodacious Eagle into a good spot for a 5-year-old career. He was proved right when the gelding won the March 12 Grade 2 Eastex Stakes at Remington Park.
“He’s in better shape now than he’s ever been,” said owner Johnny Trotter.
Ricky Ramirez broke Bodacious Eagle on top from the outside post. The 6-5 favorite, Bodacious Eagle won the 350-yard race easily by 1 1/2-lengths in :17.579. The win boosted the gelding’s earnings to $719,831.
Bodacious Eagle, at 2, finished third in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, at 3 won the Texas Classic Derby-G1 and Dash For Cash Derby-G3, and at 4 finished second in the Eastex Stakes-G2.
La Feliz Montana Ranch, LLC bred Bodacious Eagle in Oklahoma from winner Bodacious Dream. The mare, a daughter of Champion Dashing Phoebe, has produced 13 winners from 18 starters, including stakes-placed Tango In Cash.
Thomas Lepic’s homebred The Fiscal Cliff (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Signs Zoomer) finished second for trainer Kasey Willis and jockey Cesar Gomez. The 4-year-old multiple stakes winner was coming off a victory in the 2016 Polk County Derby.
Cody Wainscott piloted I V Gone (Ivory James- Bye Bye Bygones) to third. Juliana Mancillas trains the 7-year-old gelding, who most recently won the Jerry Jaggars Memorial Stakes, for owner Celesse Fregoso.

by Emily Blankenship
Valiant Rogue kicked off his 2017-racing season with a victory in the $61,800 Mighty Deck Three Stakes, a 250-yard dash at Remington Park,
