FDP ROCK SOLID
by Michael Compton
FDP Rock Solid went from last to first with a flurry to win the $119,822 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity at Retama Park on July 2.
With Gaspar Garcia aboard, FDP Rock Solid was 10th and last early in the 350-yard fixture, but flew down the lane to collar Katharsis and Already Gone Famous nearing the wire to post the neck victory.
Katharsis and Already Gone Famous, both game in defeat, finished in a dead- heat for second. FDP Rock Solid clocked the distance in :17.948 and earned a speed index of 91 for trainer Esteban Rubio.
A Texas homebred for Sarah Huskey, FDP Rock Solid improved his race record to 3-2(1)-1-0, and the $47,929 winner’s share of the purse increased his bankroll to $53,039.
Bitterroot Futurity
FDP Rock Solid won his Sam Houston Race Park career debut at 300 yards in May.
He then closed from the back of the pack to finish second in his TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity trial heat on June 17 at Retama Park behind Katharsis. FDP Rock Solid clocked in at :18.174 in the trials for the seventh fastest qualifying position. Katharsis set the :17.924 standard.
FDP Rock Solid is out of 3-time winner First Down Payment. The mare has produced five winners and 100% money earnes from six starters, including I Can’t See Jack, winner of the 2010 Rocky Mountain Futurity-G3.
Katharsis and Already Gone Famous couldn’t be sep- arated at the finish line and shared second place honors. Katharsis, piloted by Eddie Sanchez, dueled and was just
barely out finished by the winner. Bred in Texas by Bobby Cox, Katharsis races in the colors of Emmanuel Villarreal and is trained by Angel Sanchez.
Sanchez also sent out Already Gone Famous for Bar M Quarter Horses. Luis Vivanco rode the gelding, who was bred in Texas by Rick Young. Already Gone Famous is a 2-time winner from 5 lifetime starts, includ- ing his TQHQ Sires’ Cup Futurity trial heat

        LONG LOST BUDDY
by Tracy Gantz
The Hanson family had an outstanding night at Sandy Downs on June 25. Their RTM Stables co-owned the winners of the Bitterroot Futurity and Bitterroot Derby, Long Lost Buddy and Magic Moment Blues, and Mark Hanson trained them both.
“Long Lost Buddy has been on the outside in his last three outs, and he really relishes the outside part of the track,” said Hanson. “He just cruised in his trial, and when
he drew the 10 in the Futurity,
we knew it was his race to lose.”
Long Lost Buddy had no intention of losing. Under jockey Uriel Dominguez,
he broke 4th and just kept improving his position, taking the race by a head in :17.380 for the 350 yards and upping his total bankroll to $57,437.
RTM owns Long Lost Buddy with Ben McKinney and Richard Gardner.
176 SPEEDHORSE, July 2016
Long Lost Buddy, who earlier this year captured the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic at Pocatello Downs, cost $28,000 at the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The Hansons nearly lost him because he developed into a bilateral cryptorchid, with one of his testicles in the abdominal wall. Hanson’s father, Jim, and his sister, Theresa, provided him with special care at their farm in Idaho.
“It’s a miracle he even made it to be a racehorse,” said Mark.
Dr. Steve Burns bred Long Lost Buddy in California
from unraced Remember The Cartel and consigned him to the sale through Burns Ranch. Remember The Cartel has produced 100% money earners with two winners from four starters, including stakes-placed Separate Cartel. The third dam, Kool Kue, produced multiple Champion Kool Kue Baby.
Jesus Valenzuela piloted Mahoney N Tacklebery (Favorite Cartel-Fountain Bleu) to second. Riley Moosman trains the gelding for owner Ben Peterson. Mahoney N Tacklebery earlier won a non-wagering event and his Bitterroot Futurity trial as the fastest qualifier.
Hanson also trains JB Corona Heart (Lovin This Corona-Pearl Heart), who finished third under jockey Nakia Ramirez. RTM and McKinney own gelding, a two-time winner.
Completing the field were Bannister (Maknmoves-Goddess Artemis), A Cartel Hustle (Favorite Cartel-Mothers Gift), Doctor Fantastic (Fantastic Corona Jr-Docs Check), One Sweet Fool (One Sweet Jess-Gigarad), Movin The Doe (Maknmoves-Bundle Doe), Makinproudmoves (Maknmoves-Proud Moon Bug), and Bos On Time (Bodacious Dash-One Prompt Chick).
