                                Dolls Prodigy Stakes
SHURNUF SHIMMER
by Danny Camp
It was a beautiful day in Colorado and Arapahoe Park was the place to be for the running of the Dolls Prodigy Stakes on June 5. A 350-yard race for three
year olds, the contest carried a total purse of $16,000. The track was fast and the start was good for all, but the end was the best for Shurnuf Shimmer.
The sorrel gelding stepped away from the 4-post mid-pack. Rider Alfredo Triana Jr. gave a great ride and did what only a good jockey can do. Shurnuf Shimmer responded well and stuck his nose in front at the wire, stopping the clock at :17.750 to earn a speed index of 91. The $9,600 winner’s share makes his total earnings $20,083 and his race record is now two wins out of eight starts.
The folks that brought Shurnuf Shimmer to the track include owner/breeder Hugo Sierra Barron
and trainer Jose Barron. The gelding was bred in Colorado out of Seis Star Glitter, a 2-time winner who is multiple graded stakes placed. The mare has produced four starters, with all of them being money earners. Shurnuf Shimmer is her first stakes winner.
Tsunami Jack (Wave Carver-Smash Dance) had the lead half way down the track and was able to hold on for second place money. He is owned by Miguel Contreras and trained by Julio Corral. Juan Pulido was in the irons.
The bettors favorite, A Beautiful Flame (Walk Thru Fire-Corona For You), banked third place money. She is owned by Hugo Sierra Barron and trained by Jose Barron. Ramiro Garcia was handling the reins.
Followed by Fighter Gone Wild (Fighter
On Fire-Wanna Know Now), Django Fury (Furyofthewind-Fish N Glow), Keysas Si (Coronas Fast Dash-Glow N Go Tell), Zoomin In Levis (Jess Zoomin-Special Lady Olene), Hecouldgoalltheway (Jess Zoomin-Be Gone With It), La Sombra Del Corona (Coronas Finest Hour-Sombra Del Caporal) & Rare Valor (Valiant Hero-Rare Pizazz).
Harley Greene Derby
MY LOUISIANA ROD
by Danny Camp
Indiana racing makes a fellow think of the Indy 500, but at Indiana Grand all eyes were on the running of the Harley Greene Derby on June 4. A race, which
was worth $89,800, was run over a muddy track
with clouds overhead. It was My Louisiana Rod who stepped up her game to get the win. Coming into the finals, the filly had the third fastest qualifying time from the May 20 trials after finishing second to fastest qualifier Bella Estrella. My Louisiana Rod rose to the occasion, however, when the money was on the line.
In the Harley Greene Derby, My Louisiana Rod stepped away from the 10-post in last position. She spot- ted the field 1/2-length, but that’s when jockey Berkley Packer urged her on and helped her cross the wire a neck in front. The bay filly stopped the clock at :17.433 for the 350 yards, earning a 104 speed index. The $49,390 first place check takes her total earnings to $177,273, and she now has a race record of four wins out of seven races, including additional stakes wins in last year’s QHRAI SSA Futurity and Speed Sale Futurity as well as a 2nd place finish in the Gordon Mobley Futurity.
My Louisiana Rod is owned and trained by Randy M. Smith. She was bred in Indiana by Gordon L. Timm out of unraced Miss Louisiana Blue. The mare has produced 100% money earners from two starters, but My Louisiana Rod is her best product.
Bella Estrella (Way Down Town-Tuff Chiclet)
was 2nd under Cristian Esqueda for owner Almanza Gustavo Jr. & trainer Julio Almanza. Beach Bum Eddie (Escondido Beach-Carman Copy) was 3rd under Cesar Esqueda for owner/trainer Anthony Cunningham. Followed by Coco Beach (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee), Wrs Kool Bob (Kool Quick Kid-Va Bebe), Heisasheis (Chilled Corona-Sheisassheis), Megatron Harry (Escondido Beach-Chicks Sweet Donna),
Dixie Cup Lou (La Jollaroid-Shes So Gaudy), Absolut Chilled (Chilled Corona-A True Stoli) & Daybreak Dash (Twaynas Dash-Streakin Keep Sake).
Indiana Grand Classic
MAVARA VEGAS
by Tracy Gantz
Mavara Vegas loves Indiana Grand Race Course. She brought her record at the track to four of five when she captured the Indiana Grand Classic
on June 25.
After the gate opened, Mavara Vegas quickly
forged to the front under jockey Alejandro Luna. Halfway through the 400 yards, she started to put daylight on the rest, ultimately winning by 1-length in :19.806.
Last year at Indiana Grand, Mavara Vegas cap- tured the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby. After the meet ended, trainer Sacramento Chavez took her to Florida, where she unfortunately got injured.
“It took us the whole meet to get her back, and she didn’t run well there,” Chavez said.
Chavez trains Mavara Vegas for owner Alejandro Medina, who bought her in the fall of 2014. Dunn Ranch Ltd. bred her in California from Jess Like Vegas. The mare, a full sister to stakes-placed Queen Of Torts, has produced two winners from four starters.
Scandalia (First Prize Perry-El Streaker), owned by Shanell Rogers, trained by Joe Davis, and ridden by Rolando Pina, finished second over A Royal Fling (This Snow Is Royal-A Cartel Fling), owned by Matt Dunn, trained by Kalah Welch, and ridden by Omar Reyes.
Completing the field were DNA Dales Quick Cat (Quick Action TB-Chrystal Dale), Beach Birde (Escondido Beach-Jess Alive Bully), Beach Runner (Escondido Beach-Flashin Dee Dee), This Wagon Is Mine (PYC Paint Your Wagon-This Girl Is Special), Last Universal Baby (Universal Pride- Last Tupelo Baby), Fyre Fly (Walk Thru Fire- Decked In Six), and Streaker Bar Special (Streak And Dash-Je Nairs Special). Beach Meter, Fierce Runaway, Love To Beatcha and Shes Da One On Fire scratched.
