by Michael Cusortelli
Barue earned his first stakes victory in the $50,000 Easy Jet Stakes-RG3 for Oklahoma-bred two year olds at Remington Park on June 4. Racing for Albert &
Sandra Kay Whitmire of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Barue went 350 yards in :17.459 while earning a career-best 90 speed index and defeating High Speed Kitty by a nose. James Flores rode the colt for trainer Jerry Ingles.
Barue was stretching out in distance off of a 5th- place finish in the 330-yard FL Lady Bug Stakes on May 29. Remington Dist. Champ.-G2
JESSA LITTLE RUSTY
by Danny Camp
Overcoming adversity is the sign of a champion, and Jessa Little Rusty had to overcome an outside post position and having to run three-wide in
the Remington Park Distance Championship-G2. It was a beautiful Oklahoma evening when the
starter pushed the button for the last race of the season on June 4. In the 870-yard event that carried a total purse of $50,165, Jessa Little Rusty stepped away from the 7-post well and was in third place going around the turn. When she straightened out down the lane, still three wide, Ricky Ramirez provided the inspiration needed to get to the front and they crossed the line a nose in front. The time was :45.659 for a
93 speed index. The 6-year-old bay gelding earned first place money of $30,000, which takes his total bankroll to $160,287. His race record is now six wins out of 28 starts, with additional stakes wins in the 2014 AQHA Distance Challenge Championship-G1 and Benny Pennington Memorial Stakes.
Jessa Little Rusty is owned by Louis Howard and trained by John Stinebaugh. The gelding was bred
in Texas by Clyde Wilmott out of the mare Rustys Quickid, who is a stakes winner in her own right. She has produced 12 winners and 14 ROM from her 18 starters, including 2 additional stakes winners and 4 stakes placers. Jessa Little Rusty is now her top earner.
Mixed Fantasy (Okey Dokey Fantasy-Mixin Sixin) held on to second place for owner J K Running Horses LLC and trainer Kenny Laymon. Daniel Torres was in the irons. Trained by Tammy Johnson, Cjs Rocksolid (Rock Solid Jess-Sultry Miss) earned the third place check for his owners Rockin J Running Horses and Jack Mannning. Agustin Silva picked up the ride. Followed by Jess Twice Cash (Jess Louisiana Blue-Twice Cash), Droppin Timber (First Timber-Droppindead Gorgeous), Jmf Shazoomer (Shazoom-Jess Bingo Beth) & Youvebeenhenried (Make It Anywhere-Pals Miss Phoebe). Reigning APHA World Champion Painted Turnpike, a homebred colt racing for Nolan D. Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, was
a prompt 1-2 favorite in the 440-yard National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Paint & Appaloosa Stakes-G1 at Remington Park on June 3.
Ridden by Cody Smith for trainer Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike broke near the lead, quickly moved to the front, and held a full length margin going into the stretch. With a fast charging Dashin JJ coming on strong, Painted Turnpike held on to win by a neck in :21.520.
The $21,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed the 3-year-old colt’s earnings to $287,426. Painted Turnpike earned most of that during his 2-year-old season, winning eight of nine outs including five stakes victories.
All told, Painted Turnpike has won 11 of 13 races, including eight stakes. His stakes wins include five Grade 1 events. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Paint & Appaloosa Stakes represented his first start since May 20, when he ran second, a 1/2-length behind Dashin JJ as
