TEMPTING VALOR
by Michael Compton
Tempting Valor scored the first stakes win of his career storming home strongly in the $24,000 Skip Zimmerman Memorial at Canterbury Park on June 19.
With Jorge Torres riding, Tempting Valor came away from the starting gate in sixth position for the 350 yards test. Once he hit his best stride while rac- ing in the middle of the track, the 4-year-old gelding ran down the early leaders in the lane and shot clear late to win by 1-length. He stopped the timer in :17.870, earning a speed index of 95 for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.
Owned by Matt Ratliff and Vicki D. Tebow, Tempting Valor picked up the $12,000 winner’s share of the purse, increasing his lifetime bankroll to $105,278. He also finished 2nd in this year’s Boyd Morris Memorial Handicap at Remington Park and 3rd in last year’s John Deere Stakes at Lone Star Park.
Luis Gerardo Aguirre bred Tempting Valor in Oklahoma out of the mare Thanks Jens. She has produced 100% money earners from 12 starters with earnings over $200,000, including stakes winner Valjean and stakes-placed Arch Enemy.
Camy and Allen Hybsha‘s Ricky Separate (Inseperable-Quick Meggie), ridden by Nik Goodwin, flashed early speed and finished second for trainer R. Hybsha.
Race favorite Sudden Separation (Inseperable- Okie Dokey Annie) dueled early and held third with Stormy Smith in the saddle for owner Duane Murphy and trainer Casey Black.
Lika Nightmare (Rare Bar-Special Bold
Chick), Hastabealeader (Hasta Be Fast- Leadmetoyourladder), Fantsy Pants (Splash Bac-Corona Deluxe), Fiftyshadezofgrey (Corona Cartel-Shahayla), Divas Candy Girl (Spit Curl Jess-Some Kinda Diva), Watch My Wallet Loto (Mr Piloto-Cocopata) and Racy Casanova (Stel Corona- Miss Racy Eyes) completed the order of finish.
Bob Morehouse Stakes
V OS FILO
by John Moorehouse
Canterbury Park has become familiar territory for V Os Filo. On June 26, he won the $29,500 Bob Morehouse Stakes to record his first career vic-
tory in stakes company.
Both of V Os Filo’s wins have come at
Canterbury Park, as well as a runner-up finish in last year’s running of the Minnesota Futurity. Rodney Von Ohlen owns and bred V Os Filo, a three-year-old gelding whose $14,750 prize from the Bob Morehouse Stakes nearly doubled his cumulative earnings to $34,910.
A steady pace made the difference for V Os Filo in the Bob Morehouse. The gelding was running sixth
at the first call, but gained ground on his rivals and led by a 1/2-length by the time he reached the stretch. The Ed Ross Hardy trainee continued to separate himself with every subsequent stride and reached the wire with a strong 1 3/4-length margin of victory.
Nik Goodwin rode V Os Filo, who finished
the 400-yard event in :20.752 and became the fifth stakes winner out of his dam, Miss Eyewear. Von Ohlen also bred Miss Eyewear, a lightly-raced 2000 mare. The other stakes winners in the brood include First Class Smarty, who holds five stakes victories and a career bankroll over $133,000.
Hardy also trains Dashing Tee (Volcom-Dashing Dion) who finished second for owner Arthur Harold Wilmes. Jose Montoya did the riding. Little Bit Brandy (Within Range-Little Special Flame) hit the board in third for owner Lowell Schrupp and trainer Robert Johnson. David Pinon was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Wavin
Bye Bye Carver (Wave Carver-Dalark), Fishin In The Brook (Brookstone Bay-Hempeness), Rey D Arranque (Afterallitsme-Jazzing Jackie), Dashing Good Reason (Good Reason Sa-Dashing Mariah), Bee Bee Guns (Zoomin For Bux-Garters N Guns) and Irish Brew (Jess Zoomin-Irish Bailey Brew).
Gopher State Derby
EAGLES SPAN
by John Moorehouse
Running at Canterbury Park agrees with Eagles Span. The three-year-old colt notched his third stakes win at the Minnesota track in taking the
$29,200 Gopher State Derby on June 12. Owned by Tom and Bill Maher, Eagles Span has tallied 5 of his 6 career wins at Canterbury. The colt’s bankroll improved to $171,253 with the $14,600 winner’s prize from this event. Eagles Span now has a race record of 6(3)-2(1)- 1(0) from 11 starts with additional wins in last year’s Mystic Lake Northlands and NCQHRA futurities.
Eagles Span entered as the even-money favorite
and second-fastest qualifier after winning his May 29 trial heat by 2-lengths. In the finals, trouble at the start almost spoiled his day. Eagles Span got bumped from both sides emerging from the 4-post, dropping behind more than 2-lengths as a result. Jockey Cody Smith somehow settled the colt, who quickly made up ground. Eagles Span led by a 1/2-length by the time he reached the stretch, and doubled his advantage as he hit the wire.
“I’ve never seen a Quarter Horse get knocked around that bad and then go on to win,” co-owner Tom Maher said in a Canterbury Park press release.
Entrust RT Service Inc. and FBO Tiffin bred Eagles Span and own his dam, Tiny First Effort.
The mare, who won multiple stakes and was named Champion-Three-Year-Old Filly in 2001, has produced three stakes winners & 19 winners among 28 starters.
Iowas Texan Tip (Tempting Dash-Corona Del
Rae) was 2nd under Nik Goodwin for owner Christine Hovey & trainer Ed Hardy. Jose Montoya rode Mystical Styx to 3rd for owner Elizabeth Susag & trainer Merritt Pride. Followed by Shedazzles (One Famous Eagle-Royal Ready Too Wear), One Ivory Sign (Ivory James-Stylish Sign), Cartel Dakota (Favorite Cartel-ND Bunny Jet), Effortlessly Strut (Oak Tree Special-Expect Magic), Spark Eye Jess (Jess Eye-Oopsydaisy Baby), Streak N Diamonds (Winners Version-Streak N Sierra) & Give A Wink (Talkalota Bull-Special Bold Chick).
