Jake Kapp Memorial
JESSFLIPACOIN
by Danny Camp
Rivalries are the spice of life to athletes, and this also goes for equine athletes. Gone Fast had the fastest qualifying time to the Jake Kapp Memorial from the
May 20 trials after going wire-to-wire in her heat, scor- ing a blistering 103 speed index. Jessflipacoin had also won her trial in wire-to-wire fashion by 2-lengths. She was the 2nd fastest qualifer with a 101 speed index.
In the $21,912 Jake Kapp finals on June 4 at Weber Downs in Ogden, Utah, Gone Fast got the early break from the inside, but across the field in the 10-hole Jessflipacoin received the 2nd call. Jessflipacoin took the lead & had a head margin at the 1st call & going into the stretch. Jockey Jose Figueroa looked across the track & they were in front, but just barely. It was a close run, but Jessflipacoin flew on the outside & held the lead to cross the wire a neck in front to stop the timer at :17.650 for the 350 yards - a New Track Record beating the previous :17.660 set in 1992 by Abadasher. Jessflipacoin earned an impressive & career high 106 speed index.
Trained by Mike Taylor, the $7,669 winner’s share took Jessflipacoin’s earnings to $11,959 & her race record to 3 wins from 5 starts. She was also 2nd in the 2015 Bucking Horse Sale F. Bred in Montana by Ray & Wendy Norgaard, Jr., Jessflipacoin is the 1st foal out of 12-time winner/Grade 2 finalist Smart Dawn. who set a New Track Record at Wyoming Downs back in her day.
Gone Fast (Meter Me Gone-Beautiful Ashlee) was 2nd under Uriel Dominguez for Phoenix Farms & trainer Skyler Greene. Pcr Separate Stone (Brookstone Bay-Classy Sassy Anna) was 3rd under Jesus Canales for Greg Torgerson & trainer Jere Brinkerhoff. CYPRESS SALLY
by John Moorehouse
Running at Weber Downs seems to suit Cypress Sally. After winning her trial in wire-to-wire fashion and setting the 350-yard New Track Record in qualify-
ing for the Sherm Hadley/Ed Giles Memorial Futurity on May 21, the filly came back to win the $66,282 finals on June 4. Cypress Sally made her stakes-winning trip in :17.631 for a 107 speed index—her third straight in triple digits. She was even quicker in the trials, finish- ing in :17.564 to break a record that stood for 24 years.
A & C Racing and Roping owns Cypress Sally, who, since making her debut in April, has compiled
3 victories in 4 starts and has a lifetime bankroll of $28,035 with the addition of the $23,200 prize from this futurity. The only defeat for Cypress Sally came in the Dixie Downs Futurity, in which she finished 4th.
Chancey Spencer trains Cypress Sally, who broke well from the outside starting gate in the Sherm Hadley/Ed Giles Memorial Futurity. The filly was 2nd by a head at the 1st call, and then she was in the lead. She had a head margin going into the stretch and held off Oh So Fancy Fancy to win by a neck. Tony Guymon drew the riding assignment.
Bred by Chad Richard, Cypress Sally is the 1st stakes winner out of Luscious Legs. The mare has pro- duced 4 starters from 9 offspring. All of the foals out of Luscious Legs are Register of Merit and money earners.
