Expo Square Stakes
PAINTED JOSY
by John Moorehouse
The betting favorite in the Expo Square Stakes, Painted Josy, showed the oddsmakers’ their faith was justified as he made a driving finish to win the $17,350 Expo Square Stakes at Fair Meadows on June 24.
Breaking from the outside gate in the eight- horse field, Painted Josy was running second at the first call and was part of a two-wide battle off the turn. Jockey Edgar Martinez urged Painted Josy past his rival, and the gelding turned on the jets
to coast to the finish line sporting a 1 1/2-length margin of victory.
Owned by George Carter, Painted Josy now has won the Expo Square in back-to-back years and holds three total triumphs in stakes company. Painted Josy’s latest victory reaped a $10,338 payday that pushed the gelding’s cumulative earnings to $165,358.
A Brian Muse trainee, Painted Josy completed his 870-yard trip in :46.059, registering a 94 speed index.
Painted Josy logged his seventh win in 27 life- time starts. The gelding has been a distance special- ist as of late. Since his 2015 debut, 11 of his 12 outs have come at the 870-yard distance.
Linda Carol Carter bred Painted Josy out of the Thoroughbred mare She’s Josy.
Blazen Panther (Panther Mountain-Blazen Madie) made a late rally to secure runner-up honors for owner/trainer Luz Chavira. Daniel Torres drew the riding assignment.
Droppin Timber (First Timber-Droppindead Gorgeous) hit the board in third place. The gelding is owned by Frank Greenhaw and trained by Orrin Cogburn. Randy Wilson was in the irons.

by John Moorehouse
Catmandu was the cat’s meow in the Fair Meadows Juvenile, making a driving finish to win the $17,500 stakes on June 24.
Catmandu established himself late in the 350-yard competiton. The Loyd Moreland trainee broke from the 8-hole, was running third at the first call and

Leta and Delbert Moreland Jr. own the two-year- old gelding, who made his second trip to the winner’s circle in three career starts and logged his first stakes victory. The gelding also reaped a $10,284 payday, nearly doubling Catmandu’s previous lifetime bank- roll to a new total of $22,114.
Catmandu became the first stakes winner out
of his dam, Takin On A Miracle. The 2001 mare has five foals, three of whom have made starts. DM Screamin Chick, a 1/2-sister to Catmandu, is stakes- placed with a third-place finish in the 2013 Fair Meadows Maturity. She also set a 250-yard track record at Prairie Meadows. Golden Driller Stakes
I V GONE
by Michael Compton
The consistent gelding Mr Jo Eagle was sent off
as an even-money choice in the Golden Driller Stakes at Fair Meadows on June 19. When the dust settled on the 350-yard test, however, trainer Juliana Mancillas had stolen the spotlight from the heavy favorite with I V Gone.
Mancillas saddled the top three finishers in
the race, led by the 18-1 upset winner I V Gone, a 6-year-old black gelding who raced in third position in the early stages of the race. He grabbed the lead in the lane and defeated stablemate Secret Courage by 3/4-length at the finish under the guidance of Edgar Martinez. I V Gone stopped the timer in :17.399, earning a speed index of 98 and a third stakes win.
Owned by Celesse Fregoso, I V Gone added the $10,230 winner’s share of the purse to his coffers, boosting his total earnings to $124,150.
Bred in Oklahoma by L. P. Frank, I V Gone is out of Bye Bye Bygones who has produced 100% money earners from six starters including her top money earner Bye Byefreighttrain, as well as stakes- placed Bye Bye Cartel.
Mancillas also conditioned runner-up Secret Courage (Captain Courage-Secretively), ridden by Benny Landeros for owner Francisco Acevedo.
Third place finisher Mr Special Cartel (Carters Cartel-Havana Special TB) is owned by Francisco Acevedo and ridden by Cody Wainscott. Juliana Mancillas also trains the brown colt.
