Subasta Selecta Derby
SHINEY SIX
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
There are horses who, when they find them- selves on the track, they add a special touch to every race, especially if it’s a clasico. This is the case for the Mexican fillies Shiney Six and La Chemita, who have raced together in the final of the Mexico Bred Juvenile Challenge and now in the Subasta Selecta Derby, with Shiney Six resulting as the winner both times.
Their most recent meeting was held on Aug. 30, at 400 yards at the Hipodromo de Las Americas.
The first stage of the derby was held on Aug. 16 with the participation of 28 three year olds, from which the top 10 were selected with a leading time of 19.692 seconds established by the grey filly named La Chemita, followed by Beduina Coronada and Shiney Six.
Two weeks later, they returned to the same stage to star in the finals and for the best part of purse, which amounted to 1,098,525 pesos (approximately US $68,658). The favorites to win were Shiney Six, Pb El Cirujano and La Chemita, in that order.
It was a clean start for all, with each imme- diately taking their straight lane. La Chemita (#1) took the lead at the start and moved with impressive speed in the first half of the race until she began to drift towards the right and
move to the center of the track, which meant losing valuable fractions of a second that gave way to Shiney Six (#7) and let her hunt down the finish line, snatching vic- tory away by a difference of a millimeter in a photo finish.
It was a spectacular clos-
ing, which put the excited
crowd on their feet waiting
for the final result and enjoy-
ing the expectant outcome
and victory for one over the other main opponent, with as much recognition to the clean performance of horses and riders on the track, and in particular the courage of these two fillies.
Eddi Cuellar, radiant on top of Shiney Six, left everything on the track and stopped the clock at 19.43 seconds (SI 99). German Callejas, who owns the filly and Cuadra El Milagro, accompanied her to the winner’s circle followed by a joyous crowd and trainer Alfredo Martinez Mora.
Her winning record is now 7 wins, with an arrival at first and another in second in 14 appearances, earning 1,399,050 pesos (US
$97,992 approximately).
She was bred by Everardo Muzquiz, who consigned her at the 2013 Subasta Selecta Yearling Sale (lot 253), where she was acquired by her cur- rent owner.
As previously mentioned, La Chemita (Bullish One - Consistently), finished second representing Cuadra La Presita under the direction of Jose Trinidad Diaz for trainer
Eleazar Vazquez Ruvalcaba.
In third came the filly Rd Native (Native
Cartel - Red Gucci Shoes), driven by Francisco Javier Fernandez. She is owned by Cuadra Las Palmas and saddled by Juan Carlos Andrade Garcia.
The other finalists concluded in the follow- ing order: Pb El Cirujano (Jess Call Me Doc
– Quick Back), Beduina Coronada (Count Conrad – La Corona Six), Dancer Perry (Jesstified – Lucky Lady Dancer), Nc Elegance (Native Cartel – Future Elegance TB), Sea Illegal (Sea Horse Corona – Illegal Doll), Tesorera (Count Conrad – Nothing Seeker) & Mi Gata (Senior Solo – Thirdrocks Delight).
