uv On The Run and Thrice Wise came together
at the start and finish of the Aug. 22 John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge. At the start, Thrice Wise, with Tony Guymon aboard, and Luv On The Run, with jockey Jose Nicasio up, bumped each other. Thrice Wise grabbed the lead about halfway through the 350 yards, and then Luv On The Run closed the gap. They each put their nose on the wire at the same time, completing the distance in :17.808.
Sergio Fiscal trains Luv On The Run, who earlier was 3rd in the California Breeders Freshman Stakes, for owner Jesus Nava. Mr. & Mrs. Judd Morse bred the colt in California from unraced Luv In The Wind, who has produced 6 starters/winners. Christopher O’Dell trains Thrice Wise for owner/breeder Parsons Ranch. The California-bred is out of stakes-placed Another Wise Lady, whose 2 starters have each won.

M
registered his 4th stakes victory in 16 starts at the Orange County racetrack, narrowly prevailing in the $25,000 Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap on Oct. 2.
With jockey Cesar DeAlba aboard, Margaritas N Coronas dueled throughout the 400-yard test. He dug in gamely late to turn back a stubborn Wilmas Alright Now by a nose, getting the distance in :20.060, which earned a speed index of 83.
Margaritas N Coronas finished 2nd in last year’s Blane Schvaneveldt Handicap, but refused to be denied this time around for trainer Bret Vickery. “There are faster horses out there, but Margaritas N Coronas gives you his all every single race,” said Vickery, who saddled the top 3 finishers in the race. “He’s just a solid horse, honest, and he’s been a lot of fun.
“All of the horses Robert has sent me have been nice horses,” Vickery added of owner Robert Hickman, “but this one might be the best one we’ve had.”
Bred by Gregory & Renee Hickman in Washington, Margaritas N Coronas now has earnings of $132,671 and has won 9 of 33 starts. Numbered among his other Los Alamitos stakes wins are the John Ward H., The Plan H. & the Los Alamitos Juv. Invit.
Margaritas N Coronas is out the stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed mare Fly Margarita, winner of the 2003 Seven Feathers Firecracker Futurity and 2nd in the 2004 Northwest Derby Challenge-G3.
Wilmas Alright Now (Im Alright Now-Wilma The Wizard), owned by John Erickson & trained by Vickery, was 2nd under Cruz Mendez. Cody Jensen piloted Vickery trainee Balata Joe Now (Im Alright Now-Balata) to 3rd for owner Mike Harrigfeld. GALLANT MYSTIC
by Michael Compton
Ridden by Cesar DeAlba, Gallant Mystic grabbed the lead at the start and maintained a clear advantage to the finish. He crossed the wire 1/2-length to the good, stopping the timer for 350 yards in :17.931. The final clocking earned a speed index of 82.
Saddling Gallant Mystic, Brinkerhoff couldn’t help but think of his later father, Dan Valgene Brinkerhoff. “We buried him a year ago today,” Brinkerhoff said. “My dad could train horses.”
Evidently, that skill runs in the family. Brinkerhoff targeted this race for his 7-year-old geld- ing, that he owns in partnership with Jesus Canales. Gallant Mystic has won 7 of 32 lifetime starts and has earned $76,478. His victory in the Kip Didericksen was the initial black-type win of his career.
“This win is in memory of my dad,” Brinkerhoff said. “We bought this horse in April. He had a chip taken out of one of his knees. We started training him for this race and things worked out nicely.”
Bred in Texas by Julianna Hawn Holt, Gallant Mystic is out of unraced The Creole Queen, also the dam of graded stakes-placed My Man Valentine.
Layne Sprouse’s CR Proud Prince (Winners Version-Proud Caption) was 2nd under Cruz Mendez for trainer Tanya Schvaneveldt. Jeremy & Brian Price’s JP Future Secret (Furrteeous-Cocas Secret) broke out and bumped after the start and rallied late to finish 3rd under Tony Guymon for trainer Bret Vickery. Followed by Zoomin For Kash (Winners Version-A Crimson Zoom), Mister Wood (Maknmoves-GW Mandi Lou), Juicy Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Eyell Fool Ya), Blistering Speed (Tres Seis-Meddlin Mischief ), Molen Road (Rebs Go Gray-Plan a Fiesta) & Warm And Cozy (Walk Thru Fire-Blanket Splitter).
