QUIRKY
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Jimmy Glenn says that Quirky used to
live up to her name, but now she is a model of consistency. Quirky scored in her fifth consecutive stakes when winning the Sept. 27 Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1 at Los Alamitos. It was her second Grade 1 win.
Jess Cuz got the jump on Quirky, and Solid Connection put herself into the race as well from the rail. Quirky, the 3-10 favorite, broke from the outside post under jockey Carlos Huerta, and once she found her best stride, she dominated. She posted a 1/2-length victory in :19.721 and earned a berth in the Champion of Champions.
“She’s matured a lot,” said Glenn, “and when a mare gets sharp, they tend to stay that way for a while. She used to be this thin, little filly, but she’s now pack- ing about 80 more pounds of muscle than last year.”
Glenn trains Quirky for Dr. Ed Allred, who bred the 4-year-old filly in California from winner Dont Pass Bar, the dam of two winners in three starters. The second dam, Ynot Bar, ran second in the 2005 Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG1 and has produced multiple stakes winner Ynot Walk.
Double Bar S Ranch LLC’s homebred Jess Cuz (Mr Jess Perry-Corona Couture) was 2nd under Alejandro Luna for trainer Elena Andrade. The 3-year-old filly was coming off a 2nd in the Golden State Derby-G2 and earlier this year ran 3rd in the Florentine Stakes. Cruz Mendez piloted Solid Connection (Mr Jess Perry-Dinastia Toll Brz) to 3rd for trainer Paul Jones
& owner Paulo Otavio Freire MacEdo. The 4-year-old filly won this year’s Dana Point Handicap. Followed by Blabber (Kiddy Up-Thinking Out Loud), Significant Heart (Corona Cartel-Jess Significant), Mrs Pickens (Walk Thru Fire-Pie Maid), Bring Me Home (Stel Corona-Bring Me Joy), Shake Djibouti (TR Dasher- Jess Shakem) & Chalalita (Walk Thru Fire-Chalala). The Streakin Clean scratched.
Cash For Kas Handicap
TRES MAGICALS
by Tracy Gantz
Most horses don’t win their first stakes by defeat- ing a Champion, but then few come from
the kind of bottom line that Tres Magicals has. She
has several champs in her pedigree, which stood her in good stead when she won the Aug. 28 Cash For Kas Handicap at Los Alamitos. Significant Heart, Champion Aged Mare of 2014, had been away from the races since January. Bettors sent her off as the 9-10 favorite in the 350-yard Cash For Kas. Tres Magicals, however, took charge as soon as the gate opened.
Tres Magicals got away quickly from the rail with Oscar Peinado aboard. They flew out to a healthy
lead, which they needed when Solid Connection and Significant Heart closed ground from the outside. Tres Magicals lasted to win by a nose over Solid Connection in :17.643. “She broke like a rocket,” Peinado said.
Jaime Gomez trains Tres Magicals for The Quarter Company LLC. The filly finished 2nd in the 2013 Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge and the 2015 Dana Point Handicap and 3rd in the 2013 Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile Stakes and Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge.
Porfirio Carrasco bred Tres Magicals in California from winner Fishers Proud, dam of 1 other starter, 2-year-old Tres Noches. The 2nd dam, stakes winner Oh La Proud, produced Champions Hawkish, Hawkinson, & Flame N Flash, and 4 other stakes winners.
Paul Jones trains both 2nd-placed Solid Connection (Mr Jess Perry-Dinastia Toll Brz), ridden by Carlos Huerta for owner Paulo Otavio Freire MacEdo, and 3rd-placed Significant Heart (Corona Cartel-Jess Significant), ridden by Ramon Sanchez for Abigail Kawananakoa. Solid Connection was coming off a victory in the Dana Point. Significant Heart has 6 stakes wins to her credit. Followed by Shake Djibouti (TR Dasher-Jess Shakem), Bring Me Home (Stel Corona-Bring Me Joy), Zigfield Follies (One Famous Eagle-Eye Follies) & Ima Foose (Foose- Sables Sixty Six). AJs Annas Secret was scratched.

FIRST DOWN TINY MAN
by Tracy Gantz
A$4,000 purchase has paid off handsomely for Colten & Wendy O’Dell and Pirate Stables. They bought First Down Tiny Man for that amount, and he proved victorious in the Aug. 21 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge.
Off a little slowly, First Down Tiny Man made
up for it midway through the 400-yard contest. With Cruz Mendez in the irons, the gelding powered to
the lead and held off challengers to win by a nose in :20.099 as the 9-10 favorite. With the victory, First Down Tiny Man earned a berth to the Adequan Derby Challenge Championship-G3 at Lone Star Park. Trained by Christopher O’Dell, the gelding finished second last year in the Autumn Handicap and third in the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge-G2.
The O’Dells bought First Down Tiny Man at the 2013 Heritage Place Yearling Sale from Cory Kilgore, who bred him in Tennesee.
“I guarantee you that the man that bred and raised him, Cory Kilgore, stayed up to watch this race,” said Christopher O’Dell. “He follows this horse’s every move.”
First Down Tiny Man is out of the winning Thoroughbred mare High And Loose. The mare
has produced seven of nine Quarter Horse starters, including stakes-placed Into The Zone and Celebrate The Magic.
Paul Jones trained second-place Flying Foose (Foose-Flying Regal) and third-place Koolist (Separatist-Im Willie Kool). Jesus Ayala rode Flying Foose, who has finished second in two other stakes, and Jim Nebeker owns the gelding. Oscar Peinado piloted Mimi Wells’ homebred Koolist, who ran second in this year’s El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3.
Followed by Ruby Roja (Chicks A Blazin-Mija Roja), Twiggy Hawkins (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly) and disqualified from fourth & placed last Hiko Hellion (Desirio-Kippee Dove).
