Canada Cup Futurity -RG3
TOUGHIE
by Michael Compton
Toughie, Charles Stojan’s 2-year-old filly, is appro- priately named. The talented California-bred filly won the fourth race of her five-race career, defeating seven others in the $60,262 Canada Quarter Horse Cup Futurity-RG3 at Lethbridge on Sept. 27.
Ridden by Ricardo Moreno, Toughie popped
the gate and wrestled the early lead from Living Is Sweet. She maintained a narrow advantage over that rival in the lane of the 400-yard fixture and bounded clear in the late stages to post a 1-length victory. In winning the initial stakes race of her career, Toughie stopped the timer in a lively :19.832, earning a speed index of 102. The final clocking was just ticks off of Poutnokey’s track record time of :19.520 set in 2011.
Saddled by trainer William Leach, Toughie pad- ded her coffers with the winner’s share of $26,783, which increased her lifetime bankroll to $84,089. The filly was the fastest qualifier from the Sept. 7 trials, winning her heat by 2-lengths.
Bred by Edward Allred, Toughie is produced from the 2-time winner Hard Lining, who is also
the dam of stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Unchangeable. The full brother to Toughie captured this year’s Cypress Handicap and finished 2nd in the 2013 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Runner-up Living Is Sweet (One Sweet Jess- Excessive Living TB) proved clearly second best under Ramiro Castillo. The California-bred runner races for The Albertans and is conditioned by Buckey Stockwell. Flybye 109 (Special Fly Bye-Eyes Double Quick), owned and trained by Stockwell, finished third for jockey Scott Sterr. Perpetual Sis (Its All About Speed-Eyesa Chickin It Out), First Prize Sass (First Timber-Sass N Dass), Enjoy the Corona (Stel Corona-Enjoy the Walk), Seperate
Jess (One Sweet Jess-Quota), Sheaintawhiskylulaby (Sizzlin Red Corona-Cleats Rockette) completed the order of finish.

CRUISINFOURABRUISIN SHEZAHOTVALENTINE
by Michael Compton
Cruisinfourabruisin may not go looking for fights, but the 3-year-old sorrel gelding more often than not has the last say when he gets in a tussle.
Janice and Barry Sather’s homebred annexed the Canada Cup Futurity-RG3 a year ago as a juvenile and returned to Lethbridge to notch the 2nd stakes victory of his career, once again demonstrating his gameness in taking the $23,019 Canada Cup Derby on Sept. 27.
Saddled by Janice and ridden by Ramiro
Castillo, Cruisinfourabruisin battled with Tequila Tuesday early. After shrugging that rival off, Cruisinfourabruisin fought off a stern challenge from Goodest to prevail by a nose at the finish. Sent off as the race favorite after winning his Sept. 13 trial by 1 1/4-lengths, Cruisinfourabruisin stopped the timer for 400 yards in :20.285, earning a speed index of 90. The win improved Cruisinfourabruisin’s lifetime record to 19-9-5-2 and lifted his career earnings to $84,965.
The Alberta-bred sorrel gelding is produced from Tagulator. A winner in 2 of 16 starts, the mare was 2nd in the 2005 Alberta-bred Futurity-RG3 & 3rd in the 2006 Alberta-bred Derby-RG3 en route to earnings of $23,796. Cruisinfourabruisin is her lone stakes winner.
Goodest (Stel Corona-Plenty Good) put up a brave fight to just miss the top prize, finishing 2nd under Ricardo Moreno. The speedy gelding is owned by Charles Stojan and trained by William Leech.
Go Wave Up North (Wave Carver-News Alert) broke in after the start but ran evenly to finish 3rd under Larris Allen. The 18-1 long shot, also saddled by Leech, is owned by W D B Ranch Inc. and Gaylene Drader.
Pros Rockstar (Promised Class-Streakin CC), Tequila Tuesday (Coronas Fast Dash-Keep On Keepin On), Raging Wave (Wave Carver-Rosas Special), KG Guy (Sizzlin Red Corona-Win Thru Traffic) and SLS Vedette (FDD Dynasty-SLS Room To Zoom) followed.

Trials to the 350-yard Gillespie County Fair Futurity were held Aug. 9, and there was $148,300 on the line for those that qualified to the Aug. 23 finals. Shez A Hot Valentine was the fastest qualifier, winning her heat by a whopping 2 3/4-lengths under Rodrigo Vallejo.
The jockey was aboard once again for the finals as Shez A Hot Valentine entered the 6-hole for the start. The gray filly got away on top and left the field behind. She had a length at the first call, 1 1/2-lengths at the top of the stretch, and she finished 2-lengths to the good in :17.482. The clocking was good for a career-high 103 speed index as well as the $51,905 winner’s share.
This victory gives the filly two wins from four tries, and it looks like she’s getting better with each out. Trained by Homar Garza, Shez A Hot Valentine has now earned a total of $53,525 for owner Jamie Flores.
Bred in California by Ron Hanna, Shez A Hot Valentine is out of Double Down Baby. The mare owns a 107 speed index and won the New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity-RG3 and ran 2nd in the New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity-RG2 in a career that earned her $122,358. As a broodmare, she has pro- duced three money earners from as many starters. Shez A Hot Valentine is her first stakes horse and top earner.
Cashshae (Spit Curl Jess-Your Cash Treat) ran a steady race on the outside to finish in second place under Francisco Calderon for owner/trainer Randall
R Reed. Teavana (Red Storm Cat-Le Nennie) seemed to have trouble getting hold of the track, but a gallant effort put her up for 3rd under Saul Ramirez for owner Julio Rios and trainer Martin Rodriguez. Followed
by Cazzadores (Ragazzo-Cindys First Cd), Jmf
Cartel Jess (The Louisiana Cartel-Jess Bingo Beth),
Lil Dashing Menace (Executive Menace-Miss Ryon Dash), Jumpn Temptation (Tempting Dash-Eyesa Jumpn), Ragazzos Pop Rock (Ragazzo-Shazooms Pop Pop) & Elzorrojaz (Hez First Prize-Raise Awareness). Little Man Rockin was scratched.
