Simulcast Services Stakes
PAINT ME PERRY
by Danny Camp
The 330-yard $17,500 Simulcast Services Stakes for 3-year-old & older horses was held at Gillespie County Fair on Aug. 22. It was Paint Me Perry, a 3-year-old bay colt, who collected the $10,500 first place money.
Paint Me Perry left the 3-post and was given the 3rd call from the gates. Santos Carrizales, who was in the irons, encouraged the young stud and they moved into 2nd place at the 1st call. They remained there until the final yards, when Paint Me Perry kicked clear. The clean trip resulted in a neck victory for Paint Me Perry, who stopped the clock at :16.979 for a 94 speed index.
With the victory, Paint Me Perry now has a race record of 5 wins from 11 starts. The colt won his first 3racesinarowasa2yearold,thenhehadalongdry spell. This year, he’s won 2 of 6 starts, and it appears
he has found his stride again. He now has earnings of $276,091. The Simulcast Services Stakes is Paint Me Perry’s 2nd stakes win. Last year, he won the Oklahoma Futurity-G2 and was a finalist in the Heritage Place Futurity-G1. Earlier this season, he finished 2nd in the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3.

PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby
BAC IN FRONT
by Tracy Gantz
Jaime Gomez proved yet again what a good trainer he is by winning the Oct. 2 PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby at Los Alamitos. He had two very good horses—fastest-qualifier Forget It and multiple stakes winner Bac In Front. Gomez and Forget
It’s owner, James Streelman of Dutch Masters III, decided to scratch the gelding for the trials of the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1. But, Gomez still won the PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby with Bac In Front.
Bac In Front had a beautiful break from the outside post under jockey Carlos Huerta. She went right to the lead, but Vivid and Walk The Catwalk didn’t let her get away. Only two heads separated the first three finishers at the wire, with Bac In Front winning in :20.011 for the 400 yards.
Francisco Vega owns Bac In Front, who won con- secutive stakes earlier this year - the La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3 & Dillingham Handicap, both at Los Al.
Dr. Steve Burns bred Bac In Front in California from Running Bac, a 4-time stakes winner. Running Bac has produced 10 winners from 15 starters, including stakes winner Checknbac & stakes-placed Walkin Bac.
Vivid (Walk Thru Fire-Realistically), who fin- ished 2nd to Forget It in their trial, finished 2nd in the final. Santiago Mendez rode the filly for trainer Jose Flores and owner Howard Nichols. Last year, Vivid won the Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile.
Burns owns 3rd-placed Walk The Catwalk (Walk Thru Fire-Alley Cat Cartel), the 2nd-fastest qualifier. Cesar DeAlba rode the colt for trainer Mike Casselman. Walk The Catwalk was 2nd in the Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes.
Followed by Old Six Six (Walk Thru Fire- Kingman Kin), Flying Foose (Foose-Flying Regal), Hot Shot (Walk Thru Fire-Girl Secrets), Personal High (Walk Thru Fire-High Interest-TB), Old Girl (Stel Corona-Female First) & DQ’d from 5th to last Off Beat (Foose-Mummy).
Go Man Go Handicap-G1
MOONIST
by Tracy Gantz
Not even high weight of 129 pounds could stop Moonist from winning his 10th stakes at Los Alamitos. The gelding performed to his 1-9 favorit-
ism by easily capturing the $100,000 Sept. 20 Go Man Go-G1 Handicap. He earned a berth to the Champion of Champions-G1 in the process.
Drawn to the outside, Moonist veered out slightly at the start. “He bobbled a little bit coming out of the gate and then he broke out,” explained jockey Cesar DeAlba. “Then he started flying.”
Though Moonist lugged in a little early in the 400-yard Go Man Go, he straightened out and proved the easiest kind of winner. He won by 1 1/4-lengths in :19.599.
“With Moonist, if he breaks with the field then it’s adios,” said owner Ron Hartley. “I’m not bragging— I’m just saying what I believe about this horse.”
John Cooper trains Moonist for Hartley. Moonist was the Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding last year after winning 4 derbies at Los Alamitos. He has captured 5 of his last 6 starts, including 3 earlier stakes scores.
Vessels Stallion Farm LLC bred Moonist in California, and Hartley purchased him for $21,500 at the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Moonist is out of 2-time Champion Your First Moon. The mare has pro- duced 8 winners from 11 starters, including stakes win- ners Jess My Moon, Stray Cat & Moonin The Eagle.
Multiple stakes winner Seperate Interest (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy) was 2nd under Oscar Peinado for Steve Burns & trainer Michael Casselman. French Fury (Stoli-Streakin Jessie Gail), who most recently was 3rd in the Bank of America Los Alamitos Challenge, was 3rd under Rodolfo Arvizu for Angel Villalobos & trainer Guillermo Morales. Followed by Well And Good (Separatist-How Good), Joe Legacy (Brookstone Bay-A Diamond Legacy), Stel Heights (Stel Corona-Royal Heights) & All Out Arrogant (FDD Dynasty-Oh So Arrogant). Far Niente scratched.
