  Rocky Mountain Derby
EL BEST TORNADO
Cby Danny Camp
oming in with the eighth fastest qualifying
time from the July 10 trials, El Best Tornado hit his stride in the $60,015 Rocky Mountain Derby at Arapahoe Park on July 24.
It was a rainy day with a tail wind when the gates opened, and El Best Tornado stepped away from the 4-post in second. Ridden by Valente Vorrath, the brown gelding proved best, crossing the finish line a neck in front.
Running for trainer Chris Gandarilla, the team completed the 350 yards in :17.621, while posting a career best 97 speed index.
El Best Tornado brought home the $24,006 winner’s share of the purse for owner Juan Escobedo, boosting his current bankroll to $49,420. This victory marks his fourth win and first stakes win.
Jaime H. Gomez bred El Best Tornado out of multiple winner Bo Dash Back, who ran third in the 2015 Long Beach Handicap and was a finalist in the 2016 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3. El Best Tornado is her first winner from two starters.
Fastest qualifier Kali K (One Fabulous Eagle-A Secret Episode) captured second under Jose Lopez for owner Luis Marquez and trainer Alexander Orozco.
Overcoming a slip at the start, third fastest qualifier Vamoosing (Separate Interest-Escape The Fire) was able to bank the third place check for owner Vences Racing. The Jose Arjon trainee had Daniel Valles in the saddle.

Jess Un Sies Mas and led by a head going into the stretch. This Parties Hoppin widened the gap in the final yards to his 1/2-length finish.
Ridden by Daniel Valles and trained by Jose Arjon, This Parties Hoppin finished the 350- yard out in :17.817 for a 92 speed index. The win produced a $10,530 payday that increased the gelding’s total bankroll to $65,507.
Vences Racing owns This Parties Hoppin, who has five victories in 19 lifetime starts. This Parties Hoppin closed his sophomore campaign last October with a victory in the Mile High Derby at this same Colorado course, which also marked his first win in stakes company.
