Garañones Futurity-RG2
US CHICKS CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The Garañones Futurity is restricted to Mexican bred runners who were sold at the Select Yearling Sale at the Hipodromo de las Americas, held on Oct. 12, 13 and 14, 2021. They are nominated by the breeder at the time of consignment to the auction and 13.5% of the purse collected is designed to encourage the owners to compete.
The 18 trial races were held on June 18 and 19 among 146 horses, with Blue Krash (:15.094), Poppy Cartel (:15.101) and La Corona Eagle (:15.104) standing out with the top three times of the 10 finalists.
It is important to mention that this was the first futurity in which “drug testing” was

performed before being entered to verify that participants were free of substances prohibited
in this type of competition by international regulations.
With the withdrawal of EC Apollicalprime (Cuadra Avar), the final was run on July 10 with nine participants.
In a closely contested race
that was clean from start
to finish, the bay gelding US Chicks Cartel surprised the group from the start (position #2). On his way, he moved towards the center of the track but without obstructing any of his rivals under the calm command of Miguel Ángel Rodríguez. CC Illegal exerted pressure, but reached the wire a neck behind the winner.
US Chicks Cartel covered the distance in :15.10 (SI 92), improving the :15.37 (SI 83) with which he obtained his qualifying position from the second trial on June 19 where he finished second behind BR Enamorado.
This was his second triumph, after having won his trial for the Mexico Futurity on April 17 in :13.47 which placed him in the 50th position in the general table of times of that event.
US Chicks Cartel was bred by Mr. Abelardo Gallegos Fernández, owner of the stallion Krash Cartel and the mare US Chicks (by Chicks Regard), born on Jan. 12, 2020. The gelding
is from the second crop of offspring born in Mexico, and the first to win a top futurity at the Hipodromo de las Americas.
In the 2021 Select Yearling Sale, he was sold for $200,000 pesos ($9,603 U.S. approx.) and, although he was repurchased in the ring, there was already a previous commitment of sale with Cuadra Cartas Blancas. He became the property of said barn and currently runs under that ownership. It is important to note that US Chicks Cartel is one of the four finalists from the Breeder Abelardo Gallegos, three of whom set the fastest times in the same qualifying race on June 18. Three of the qualifiers are by Krash Cartel, and La Corona Eagle is by Mr Eagle Master.
The Garanones Futurity offered a total purse of $6,511,350 pesos ($314,697 U.S. approx.),
of which $4,657,945 pesos ($225,071 U.S. approx.) went to reward the finalists with $1,956,337 pesos ($94,530 U.S. approx.) going to the winner US Chicks Cartel.
The award ceremony for the winning horse and his team was led by members of the Board of Directors of the Mexican Association of
Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, headed by President Javier Rosique León.
In second was CC Illegal, by Executive Cartel (full brother to KVN Corona), whose foals are already beginning to stand out in Mexico. His dam is Wandering Illegally (by Walk Thru Fire). CC Illegal is the property
of Cuadra Baldeli, was trained by Yair Daniel Báez Soto, saddled by Nahum de Jesús Lagunes Montero and bred by Carlos Espinoza.
Unodk (Bullish One-Corona Dot Com, by Corona Cartel) placed third, led by Leonardo Vidaña. Like CC Ilegal, Unodk is owned by Cuadra Baldeli, trained by Nahum de Jesús Lagunes Montero and bred by Cuadra La Presita.
Blue Krash (Krash Cartel-Santa Aguerrida), Mr Juan (Danny Cartel-Toles), BR Enamorado (Southern Corona-Buck The Rules), Mamba Fresa (Danny Cartel-Verdura), La Corona Eagle (Mr Eagle Master-La Corona Six) and Poppy Cartel (Krash Cartel-Poppy Hill) completed the order of finish.
