aking his fair share of appearances in stakes
events, WL Van Halen made easy work of the $29,000 GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile at Gillespie County Fairgrounds on July 16.
With Luis Vivanco aboard, the gelding broke
in second from the 7-post and quickly grabbed the lead. The team was never challenged throughout the 330 yards to cross the wire with an impressive 2 1/2-length winning margin. They stopped the clock in :16.980, which was good for a 96 speed index.
Trained by Jose Espinosa, WL Van Halen brought home the $11,790 winner’s share of the purse for owner Guerras Racing Stables, which boosted the gelding’s total lifetime earnings to $55,430.
At only two years old, WL Van Halen has won or placed in five of his seven starts, which includes
a victory in the Colors of Houston Paint Juvenile in June. The gelding was also third in the Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile and was a finalist in the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1.
Charles R. Leggett bred WL Van Halen out of multiple winner CL Trap Queen, who finished 3rd in the 2016 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 and was also a finalist in the 2016 Victoria Ennis Memorial Handicap. WL Van Halen is her first foal.
OP Royal Nitro APHA (CRM Livewire-OP Rebecca) overcame a hard bump to grab second for owner Melissa Read. The Randy Read trainee had Froylan Ramirez in the saddle. VP Double Down Dash APHA (Dos Poruno-GW Money Dash) finished a strong third under Francisco Giles for owner Glen Wilkinson and trainer Martin Rodriguez.
VP Country Smoke APHA (VP Smokey Wire- Country Danger), Wl Meme King APHA (MHM Hotwire-Unrepentant), Mr Jess Wells APHA (Osage Spirit-Get Down Jessie QH) and Adash Of Cash APHA (Midnight Cartel-Adash Of Cayenne QH) completed the order of finish. Little Sonny was scratched.
GCFA Firecracker Futurity

C Lady Eagle just barely snuck into the
$111,100 GCFA Firecracker Futurity at Gillespie County Fairgrounds on July 17 with the tenth fastest qualifying time after winning a shake.
In the finals and trained by Brittany Tellez, RC Lady Eagle and jockey Froylan Ramirez broke in fourth from the 7-post. Midway through the race, they were sitting third, making a driving finish to the wire to cross a nose in front.
They completed the 350 yards in :17.850, while posting a 91 speed index.
RC Lady Eagle secured the $38,885 winner’s share of the purse for owner Thomas Tiller, boosting her cumulative earnings to $48,164. The filly has now won or placed in three of her four starts.
R C Running Horses bred RC Lady Eagle out of lightly raced Dash With Jody. She has produced two winners from three starters. RC Lady Eagle is her first stakes winner. RC Lady Eagle traces back to his third dam, Deckas Doll, who was a winner in the Michigan Classic Stakes where she set a New Track Record for 400 yards.
Fastest qualifier Spumante (FDD Dynasty-Miss Totts) took a hard bump but showed determination to finish second under Nestor Duran for owner/trainer Jose Espinosa. The gelding has not finished worse than second in all four of his starts. Best Magic Piloto (Mr Piloto-Little Magic Sisand jockey H. Hernandez made a late rush to grab third for owner Alfredo Valencia and trainer Jose Amaya. The gelding has won or placed in three of his four starts. Followed by The Flash King (First Moonflash-Prairie War Princess), One Sweet Amelia (One Sweet Jess-Madie Lou), Aint I A Jumping (Jumpn Chic-Aint I Jettin), Sendsation (Tempting Dash-Jess Send Corona), Queens R Tempting (Tempting Dash-Queens R Blue), Irish Vamoose (Big Lew-Fast Red Rose) and Jess Another Hero (Valiant Hero-Jess Braggin).

t has been about a year since WB Stevie Nix visited
the winners’ circle, but she turned things around in the $23,500 GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Maturity at Gillespie County Fair on July 16.
Luis Vivanco rode the filly to an impressive wire- to-wire 3/4-length victory. The team completed the 350 yards in :17.675, while posting a 96 speed index.
Owned and trained by Gary Jacobs, WB Stevie Nix brought home the $9,993 winner’s share of the purse, bringing her cumulative earnings to $88,872.
Raced in Oklahoma and Texas, WB Stevie Nix has also won the 2021 version of this stakes as well as the 2020 GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Juvenile.
WAG Ranches bred WB Stevie Nix out of Zoomin Moon, who won this stakes even in 2014. In addition to the GCFA Paint & Appaloosa Maturity, Zoomin Moon also won the 2012 Colors of Houston Futurity-G2. She has produced 100% winners from two starters, including Wendells Livewire, who was a finalist in the 2018 American Paint Classic Futurity-G1.
Seperate Wagons APHA (Little PYC-Sallye Rand) fought the good fight to bank second place money under Ricardo Garza-Cruz for owner Ervey Balderas and trainer J. Frank Mendez. The gelding finished third in the Colors of Texas Maturity-G2 in June.
Secret Livewire APHA (CRM Livewire- Moonlight Who TB) and jockey Francisco Giles finished in third for owner 2LD Farm LLC and trainer Gary Jacobs. The gelding won the Colors Of Houston Derby in May.
Dos Pennies APHA (Dash Master Jess QH-Double Dashing), Little Party Wagon APHA (Little PYC-Anns Party Doll TB), Texas Magazeche APHA (Texas Magnum Seven-Azes And Queens) and VP Speedy Boy APHA (VP Slick Winner-Pharr Out Winner) completed the order of finish.
