TOMMY THE TRAIN
by Michael Compton
The classy 4-year-old bay gelding Tommy The Train was winless in 5 starts this year prior to the Indiana Championship at Indiana Grand on Oct. 27. For this race, the son of Freighttrain B got back on the winning track in the $82,930 event at 400 yards.
Ridden by James Flores, Tommy The Train broke sharply from the inside post on the lead. He led by as much as a length in the lane and shrugged off a late challenge from Country Boy 123 to win wire-to-wire by a neck. Tommy The Train stopped the clock in :19.672 and earned a speed index of 96 for trainer Larry Sharp.
“He was sick the first part of this year and I liked to never have gotten him over it,” Sharp shared with the media following the win. He likes the farm where he can relax and that was good for him.”
The win, the ninth of his career and fourth
in stakes company, improved Tommy The Train’s record to 18-9(4)-1-2(1) and increased his bankroll to $271,119 with the addition of this $46,486 winner’s share for owners Brant & Jon Barley and Brad Sharp.
Bred in Missouri by Duane Murphy, Tommy The Train is out of 7-time winner Okie Dokey Annie. Winner of the 2006 Kansas Futurity-G2 and 2 other stakes, the mare earned $94,773 and set a 350-yard Ntr at Will Rogers Downs. She is also the dam of Grade 1 winner Sudden Separation, an earner of $260,174.
Runner-up Country Boy 123 (Country Chicks Man-Very Dashin 123) brushed early and closed resolutely under Luz Martinez to just miss for owner Ruth Barbour & trainer Anthony Cunningham. Race favorite As and Js (Apollitical Jess-Adolph
Tres Knockout) & Yordanis Amaro were 3rd
for owner-trainer Leonardo Alcala. Followed by Woop Dee Doo (Good Reason SA-Jess Racy Eyes), Encore (Corona Cartel-Jess Genuine), Play Harder (Furrtreeous-Kitty D Ville), and Llano Senator (Louisiana Senator-Eyesa Lil Cuervo). Prudish Cartel was scratched.

Flight To La Jolla scored his first stakes victory when he won the $122,520 QHRAI Derby at Indiana Grand Race Course on Oct. 27.
Starting from the outside position in a 10-horse field, Flight To La Jolla got away from the gate a bit slow, but appeared to hit his stride midway through the race. Fourth at the first call, Flight To La Jolla was third going into the stretch and overtook the two rivals ahead of him to win by a head.
A three-year-old gelding, Flight To La Jolla now holds three victories in nine career starts. While this marked his first win in stakes company, he also fin- ished second in the Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby earlier this year.
Dan Frazier owns Flight To La Jolla, a Matt Frazier trainee who had Shanley Jackson in the irons. The geld- ing collected a $67,386 payday that swelled his career earnings to $91,881. The victorious 400-yard trip took :19.659, generating a career-high 97 speed index.
Linda Loftis Tobias bred Flight To La Jolla out of 2-time winner I Fly American. She has produced 100% winners from three starters, including Texas Hi-Point Three-Year-Old Filly Brookside, who won the 2017 Sam Houston Distaff Challenge and the King William Handicap. Flight To La Jolla becomes her second stakes winner and top earner.
Jess Shantastic (Fantastic Corona Jr-Jesses Candy) was 2nd under Oscar Cordova for Stanley Forbes & trainer Paul Sedillo. Tres My Heart (Heart Of The Cartel-Famous Mariah) & Giovani Vazquez-Gomez were 3rd for Jose Plascencia and trainer Hector Sanchez.
