IRIS ROYAL JESS

Iris Royal Jess earned his first stakes victory in the $121,850 Polk County Derby at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 13.
The 3-year-old gray gelding broke on top from the 2-post and rallied strongly to go the 400 yards
in :20.026 under jockey Lucas Constantin. Iris Royal Jess won by 3/4-lengths over Rakin In Jo. Alex Wessels trains Iris Royal Jess for owner B/B Wessels LLC of Lamont, Iowa.
Iris Royal Jess was winning for the fourth time
in as many outs this season. The fastest qualifier, he was coming off a 3/4-length win in the second of two trials on Sept. 29.
Raced exclusively in Iowa, Iris Royal Jess has won a total of five of seven starts and has banked $120,804, of which $80,409 has been pocketed this season including the $54,833 winner’s share of this purse. His resume includes a second-place finish in last year’s Jim Bader Futurity.
Warren Garrels bred Iris Royal Jess out of lightly raced Pure Royal Dash. She has produced 100% money earners from nine starters, including Iris Dashing Royal, who was third in the 2014 Polk County Derby. Iris Royal Jess is her first stakes win- ner and top earner.

Altoona Derby
WALCOTT

Walcott made it four consecutive victories when he scampered to a narrow score in the $123,191 Altoona Derby at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 13.
Ridden by Mauro Salcedo, Walcott chased from second early in the 400-yard dash. He dueled with Tempting Annee GL the length of the lane, just get- ting to the line in time to defeat the willing rival at the finish by a neck. Trained by Alejandro Chavez, Walcott stopped the timer in :19.779, earning a 93 speed index.
The Altoona Derby victory improved Walcott’s record to 9-5(2)-1-1 and increased his bankroll to $93,955 for owner Pedro Gutierrez Marquez. It was the second stakes win for Walcott, who annexed the Mile High Derby on Aug. 12.
Lyle Guillory bred Walcott out of two-time win- ner Jess Maganette, who was a runner-up in the 2007 Scott Lewis Handicap and La Palma Handicap.
She was also a finalist in the Rainbow Futurity-G1, Rainbow Derby-G1 and Ruidoso Derby-G1. Jess Maganette has produced 100% money earners
from seven starters, including stakes placed Cartel Madam. Walcott is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
Tempting Annee GL (Tempting Dash-Grande Annee) was second under jockey Mario Delgado for owner Garza Laurel Partnership LLC and trainer R.L. Robinson. First Of 15 (Apollitical Jess-Tinys Corona Queen) and Cristian Esqueda finished third for owner Richard Tobin and trainer Jason Olmstead.
High Valley Girl (Valiant Hero-Huckleberry Mojito), Eagle Deluxe (One Famous Eagle-Corona Deluxe), Hot Dam Bam A Lam (Captain Courage- Hot Nova), One Jess Streakin (One Sweet Jess-Miss Kips Streakin), Weetonas Lafawn (Valiant Hero-First Prize Fancy), Paint A Candy Cat (Red Storm Cat- Send Me Candy Paint) and Vallerro (Valiant Hero- Perrys Queen Bug) completed the order of finish.
Future Of Iowa Stakes
ISLAND GURL

After finishing second in last year’s running of the Future of Iowa Stakes, Island Gurl bounced back to win the latest version of the race, using a big start to sail to victory in the $60,000 stakes at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 13.
Trained by Tony Jones, Island Gurl broke on top from the 6-gate. Jockey Jorge Torres had the mare in front by 1/2-length at the first call and going into the stretch, then doubled her advantage to reach the wire with a 1-length margin of victory. Island Gurl finished her 350-yard trip in :18.038, earning an 84 speed index and bringing home a $28,200 payday that pushed her lifetime earnings into six figures at $115,281.
The five-year-old mare, who is owned by Richard Tobin, recorded her first stakes win in what marked her 18th career start. Her runner-up effort in the 2017 Future of Iowa marked her debut in stakes company. She had a 10-month layoff following that race and exactly one year after her second-place stakes run, she outran all her rivals.
Sheri Lynn Andrew bred Island Gurl out of lightly raced Streaking Out. She has produced 100% winners from seven starters, including stakes placed Where The Eagles Fly. Island Gurl is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Wagons Queen (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Queen Of Anywhere) was second under David Brown
for owners Robert Brown, Sandra Brown & John Lawless and trainer Brent Clay.
Miss Alice Grace (Jess Racy-Beduinos Heart) and Jonathan Dominguez finished third for owner Larry Bain and trainer Charley Hunt.
MGA Lil Kool Wilena (Lil Kool Wagon-Time For Wilena), Boogie Wagon (Lil Kool Wagon-Boogie N Bull), Stoli Cartel (Carters Cartel-Stoli Minute), Kool Lil Jess (Lil Kool Wagon-Jess Shine) and Spooftrain 7 (Freighttrain B-Finely Tuned Chivato) completed the order of finish.
