Governor’s Stakes
WRS VALENTINO
by John Moorehouse
Astrong rookie season continued for WRS Valentino as the gelding charged to his second career stakes victory in the $140,960 Governor’s Stakes at Indiana Grand on Oct. 27.
After finishing second in his Oct. 16 trial and log- ging the seventh-best qualifying time, WRS Valentino showed more than enough speed in this one. The Randy Smith trainee broke from the 4-gate in the middle of the pack, but grabbed the lead by a head as he went into the stretch. Jockey Berkley Packer kept WRS Valentino in the front the rest of the way, hold- ing off Jess My Joy to win by a neck. The 350-yard trip took :17.694 and registered a 93 speed index.
Home-bred by Williams Racing Stable Inc., WRS Valentino now holds three wins in five career starts since breaking his maiden in May. The $77,528 payday more than doubled the gelding’s career bankroll to $152,695. Racing exclusively at Indiana Grand to date, WRS Valentino already had black type, finishing first in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity held at this track in August.
Williams Racing Stables bred WRS Valentino out of unraced WRS Kissandteller. She has produced 100% money earners from two starters. WRS Valentino is her first stakes winner and top earner.
