Bank of America Remington Championship Challenge-G2
ROCKIN DISCO
by John Moorehouse
Jack Manning always thought Rockin Disco was a talented horse capable of winning .
. . even when wins came few & far between. Thus far in his 2015 campaign, however, the 5-year-old gelding has validated the viewpoint of his co-owner. Rockin Disco is undefeated through his 1st three outs this year & added a 2nd stakes win to his resume in the $108,360 Bank of America Remington
Challenge Championship-G2 on May 10. He now holds 10 wins in 30 starts. The $49,845 payday improved his bankroll to $197,354 and qualified
him to the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1.
“I was proud to win,” said Manning, who co-owns Rockin Disco with Rockin J Running Horses. Until this year, wins had been hard to come by for Rockin Disco. He went winless in 2014 and
tallied just 3 in 9 starts in 2013. He won the 2012 Ruidoso Juvenile Chal.-G3, his only prior stakes triumph. “He was a good horse the whole time. He just had a little bad luck, but he could run,” Manning continued. “He’s got another gear on him like a lot of horses don’t have.”
Rockin Disco displayed that extra gear in the Remington Challenge. He topped the April 25
trials in :21.449 and surpassed that time in the finals with a :21.229. Rockin Disco broke solid from the 3-gate and was 3rd entering the stretch. Under jockey Ricardo Aguirre, he chased down rivals Rock You & Charvet to reach the wire first by a neck. “I knew if we could get an opening, that last 40 yards he could outrun them,” said trainer Tammy Johnson.
Rockin Disco had some pulmonary bleeding after the race, which may factor in the
future plans. “I don’t want to run him just to be running,” Manning said. “If we get him in a money race, fine. If we don’t, then we’ll rest him. He’s an awful good, tough horse.”
Bred by VWP Jr., Inc., Rockin Disco is the only stakes winner out of lightly raced Check This Disco, who has 4 starters from 5 foals.
Rock You (Foose-Babe On The Fly) was 2nd under Jimmy Brooks for Reliance Ranches LLC.
& trainer Eddie D. Willis. Charvet (One Famous Eagle-Bloomingdales) was 3rd under Modesto
Pina for Crowson Racing & trainer Anna Marie Crowson. Followed by I Bleed Red (Red Storm Cat- Secret In Stone), Tempting Secret Dash (Tempting Dash-Secret Baby Doll), Testing The Ice (Stoli- Streakin La Tac), Down Side Magician (The Down Side-Slide Of Hand), I V Gone (Ivory James-Bye Bye Bygones) & One Valiant Hero (Valiant Hero- Smiles All Around). Heritage Place Juvenile
THE FISCAL CLIFF
by Danny Camp
They didn’t make the Heritage Place Futurity finals, but running for $100,000 in the Heritage Place Juvenile on May 30 wasn’t a bad deal. The Fiscal Cliff left the 1-post in great shape, standing in the gate like a champ, and he finished the same way. The bay colt went all out and crossed the wire in :17.396, earning a speed index of 92 for the 350-yard contest.
The Fiscal Cliff came from nowhere to win his May 15 trial heat, but
he didn’t get much atten-
tion before the finals. Cesar
Gomez had the riding assign-
ment in the finals, as well as
in his previous two outs.
The Fiscal Cliff ’s record is now two wins from three starts. With the first place check of $29,070, his total bankroll stands at $41,584.
According to the colt’s trainer Kasey Willis, “The Fiscal Cliff is definitely one of
124 SPEEDHORSE, June 2015
my top two year olds. He is absolutely sound and has a bright future.” He had the 13th fastest time coming out of the trials and he was getting better, it was not a surprise to see him in front.
Kasey said The Fiscal Cliff is the kind of horse that loves his job, is easy to be around in the barn area, and has a good disposition. He’s not a very big horse, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for in toughness. As for the future,
there will be a bit of a rest period until possibly August.
The Fiscal Cliff is home bred and raised and comes from a great family. Thomas D. Lepic is his owner and breeder. The colt is out of 3-time win- ner Signs Zoomer, who finished fourth in the 2008 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity-RG2. The mare has produced 3 winners from 4 starters. The Fiscal Cliff is his dam’s second stakes winner.
The other is her top money earner, 2-time stakes winner Wagon Tales with $424,641 banked.
Hearts Ona Hero (Valiant Hero-Dashing Uno) scrambled from the 9-post under Francisco Calderon, gathered himself and ran hard on the end to take 2nd for owner J J Racing & trainer R.L. Robinson. Hyo Inseperable (Inseperable-Hy Oak Special) didn’t get away from the gates very well, but Larry Payne waited until he got his legs going in the same direction, then went to riding hard, and they finished 2nd for owners Michelle Crockett & Terry Irby. Xavier Alonzo is the trainer. Followed by BV Wagon Wheel (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Eyesa First), Venetian Paradise (Pappasito- Endless Delight), Corona Cabana (Corona Cartel- Fast Red Rose), Khat Daddy (Pyc Paint Your Wagon-Jess Ought To Go Now) & Shaky Hero (Valiant Hero-Shaky Girl). Eos Tres Bendiciones & My Corona Sweetheart scratched.
