Zoetis RP Dist. Chal.-G3
PAINTED JOSY
by Tracy Gantz
Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. has won plenty of stakes, though few have been as sweet as the May 10 Zoetis Remington Park Distance Challenge-G3. Carter captured the race aboard Painted Josy for his father, George R. Carter.
Painted Josy finished second to Champion Wahoo in their trial for the 870-yard Distance Challenge, qualifying third and second, respectively. In the final, Painted Josy broke on top from the rail and battled fastest-qualifier CJS Rocksolid and Wahoo into the turn. At the top of the stretch, Wahoo backed out and CJS Rocksolid continued to push Painted Josy, who found enough to score by 1/2-length in :45.490.
The Carters were winning the first stakes for Painted Josy, to then a successful allowance runner. Linda Carol Carter, George R. Carter’s wife, bred Painted Josy in Oklahoma. The Carters have had the family for a couple of generations. They consigned Painted Josy to the 2011 Heritage Place Yearling Sale with the James Ranch as agent and bought him back for $7,000.
Painted Josy is out of the Thoroughbred mare She’s Josy, a winner bred and raced by Linda. She’s Josy has produced three winners from four Quarter Horse start- ers and one as-yet unraced 2-year-old Thoroughbred.
2014 Brigand Stakes winner CJS Rocksolid (Rock Solid Jess-Sultry Miss), co-owned by Jack Mann & breeder Rockin J Running Horses, was 2nd under Ricardo Aguirre for trainer Tammy Johnson.
Rockin J also owns and bred 3rd-place Jess A Hilbily Bone (Rock Solid Jess-Imaginiff), and Johnson trains him. Ricky Ramirez piloted the 4-year-old gelding.
Followed by BF Farm Boy (Hawkinson-Shirleys Strawfly), Jess Twice Cash (Jess Louisiana Blue- Twice Cash), Wahoo (Feature Mr Jess-First To Celebrate) & SRD Bobwirebob (Coronas Prospect- Shouldabeenjoebob TB). Pepperchew was scratched.
Easy Jet Stakes-RG3
CELTIC EMBLEM
by Michael Cusortelli
Sent to post as the 5-2 second choice in the field of eight Oklahoma-bred 2 year olds, Kelly/ Yearsley Equine’s Celtic Emblem responded with a head victory in the $50,000 Easy Jet Stakes-RG3 at Remington Park on May 30.
Celtic Emblem covered 350 yards in :17.410 while earning a 92 speed index and her first career stakes win. Omar Reyes rode the homebred chestnut filly for trainer Dean Frey. Celtic Emblem was com- ing off of a nose victory in a 350-yard Heritage Place Futurity-G1 trial on May 12.
Campaigned exclusively in Oklahoma, Celtic Emblem has won three of four outs, and the $29,838 winner’s share of the Easy Jet Stakes purse pushed her earnings to $121,890. The filly’s resume includes a fourthth-place finish in the 330-yard $827,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity-RG3 on April 18.
The filly is one of six winners from 10 starters produced by Three Green Leaves, who won the ’07 AQHA Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Los Alamitos. Her second dam, Sky Glow, was a finalist in the 2001 La Primera del Ano Derby-G2.
Runner-up First Prize Corina (Spit Curl Jess- First Prize Corona) races for James Thorstenson, Jason Bradshaw and Samantha Bradshaw. Cesar Gomez rode the Oklahoma-bred filly for trainer Kasey Willis.
A $42,000 buy at last year’s Heritage Place Yearling Sale, Barbie Cartel (Corona Cartel-Little Kool Barbie) ran third for owner Jose R. Espinosa. Trey Wood trains the sorrel filly, who was ridden by Ricky Ramirez.
Followed by The Charm Of Corona (Corona Cartel-Charm Dance), Tomm Boy (Wave Carver- Makin It Stormy), Quions (Spit Curl Jess-Fast Prize Corona), Arolla The Dice (Ivory James-Modice) & T Time Dash (Dashin Bye-Special T Time).
Jack Brooks Stakes
BOOZIN AND CRUZIN
by Tracy Gantz
The J and B Rental entry of Boozin And Cruzin and Paint Me Perry went favored at 1-2 in the May 24 Jack Brooks Stakes at Remington Park, but the start looked like it would eliminate both of them. Paint Me Perry stumbled while Boozin And Cruzin broke outwardly.
While the start did ruin Paint Me Perry’s chances, Boozin And Cruzin was able to straighten up and win. It took quite an effort because she had to come from sixth in the 350 yards. But she responded to jockey David Pinon’s urging and won by a head. Her time on the sloppy, sealed track was :17.571.
Kevin Willis trains Boozin And Cruzin for J and B Rental. The filly began her racing career last year at Remington, finishing 2nd in a maiden race. She broke her maiden at Will Rogers Downs in her 4th start and has since been placing in allowance company.
Michael Pohl bred Boozin And Cruzin in Oklahoma from Penelope Cruzin, winner of the 2006 Governor’s Stakes at Hoosier Park. The mare has produced four winners from six starters, includ- ing Cruzin The Wagon, who captured the 2012 Jack Brooks Stakes, then a Grade 3 race, and four other stakes for earnings of $336,869.
A.C. Taylor’s homebred Specials Jamie (Ivory James-Special Anywhere) ran second for jockey Cesar Gomez and trainer Kasey Willis. The filly won the 2014 FL Lady Bug Stakes. Smart Money First (First Smart Money-Beduinos Chick Jet) finished third for jockey Jose Vega and trainer Brian Muse. Victory Farms owns the gelding, who also ran third in the 2014 Valley Junction Futurity. SM Miss Joy Rose (Apollitical Jess-Eyesa Country Miss) & Cartel Rosie (Carters Cartel-Long Stemmed Roses) dead-heated for 4th and were followed by BP Run Cartel Run (Cartel Success-Run Kita Run) & Paint Me Perry (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Baby Perry). Big Kids Birthday, BV Travelin Soldier & WL Mr Goodtime scratched.
