                 Dine Stakes (R)
One of only two fillies in a field of nine New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, Derrick W. Jenkins’ Corrina Corrina won the May 29, $100,000 Dine Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.
Corrina Corrina covered 6 1/2 furlongs
in 1:17.06 under jockey Joree Scriver, and
her margin of victory was three-quarters of
a length from 2-1 favorite Diabolical Storm. Gary Cross prepped the homebred dark bay or brown Mr. Trieste filly, who banked $60,000 from her first lifetime stakes win.
Corrina Corrina is one of 29 winners from 47 starters sired by Mr. Trieste, a multiple stakes winning Kentucky-bred son of the A.P. Indy stallion Old Trieste. Racing in five states, including New Mexico, from 2003-12, Mr. Trieste earned $605,474 from 39 starts, and his nine stakes wins included the 2005 Zia Park Distance Championship Handicap and 2006 Sunland Park Handicap.
Mr. Trieste has sired the earners of more than $2.025 million from 12 crops, including Jet N G, the winner of last year’s $100,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship at Zia Park. A half-brother to Grade 2 winner Nate’s Mineshaft, the stallion is owned by Derrick W. Jenkins, and he stands at Jenkins Farm near Hobbs, New Mexico.
Corrina Corrina is one of three winners from as many starters foaled by Scared Money, a winning New York-bred daughter of the
Mr. Prospector stallion Carson City. Her third dam, the unraced Lord Durham mare Finally Found, produced five winners from five starters, including Finality, a Dehere colt who won the 2002 Jamaica Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park, and Stolen Beauty, a Deputy Minister filly who won the 1991 Demoiselle Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.
Corrina Corrina traces back to her fourth dam, Bon Debarras, an unraced daughter of the Graustark stallion Ruritania who foaled seven winners and the earners of $1,416,360 from nine starters, including multiple stakes winners Eternal Search and Gone To Royalty, and Raslaan, a Group 3 stakes winner in Australia in 1990.
Corrina Corrina was prepped for the
Dine Stakes with a second-place finish in a 6 1/2-furlong, $55,000 non-winners-of-three allowance race for New Mexico-bred distaffers at SunRay Park on May 8. All told, the filly has won three of nine outs and has earned $196,190, of which $180,240 has been banked from six races this season.
Corrina Corrina’s Sunland Park winter campaign included second-place finishes in the March 27, $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R), and the February 20, $100,000 Enchantress Stakes (R).
Massive Roar ran third, four lengths behind Corrina Corrina, and was followed by Bear Claw, Jet Set Warrior, Lonzo Who, Right For You,
Bodie Got Gold, and American Solo. Runner-up Diabolical Storm was coming
off of a half-length victory in the March 27, $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) at Sunland Park. A homebred gray or roan son of the Forest Wildcat stallion Attila’s Storm racing for Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard, the gelding has won three
of six starts, and the $20,000 runner-up share of the Dine Stakes purse boosted his earnings to $222,600, of which $215,400 has been pocketed from five races this season.
Massive Roar races for The Quarter Company LLC, which also bred the dark bay or brown son of the Afleet Alex stallion Sway Away. Massive Roar has won two of nine races, and the $10,000 third-place share of the Dine Stakes purse increased the gelding’s bankroll to $150,663.
Corrina Corrina’s winning connections include owner Derrick W. Jenkins, trainer Gary Cross, and jockey Joree Scriver.
