after two near-misses in pursuit of a futurity victory, the third time was the charm for Hastabealeader. Gloria J. Myers’ gelding gained the advantage early in the $22,060 Northern Plains Stallion Futurity and enjoyed smooth sailing en route to win the Aug. 19 event at Canterbury Park.
Previously, Hastabealeader had finished second in the North Central QHRA Futurity and third
in the Minnesota Stallion Breeders’ Futurity. This time was different for the Robert Johnson trainee. Hastabealeader broke from the No. 6 gate in the middle of the pack but quickly charged to the front underneath jockey Clyde Smith. Hastabealeader cruised across the finish line in front by a half-length.
Hastabealeader collected his third win in six career starts, and reaped a $11,035 payday for Myers that pushed the gelding’s total earnings to $28,466.
Wardell Quarter Horses bred Hastabealeader in Wyoming and owns his dam, Leadmetoyourladder, a Special Leader mare who is stakes-placed. Leadmetoyourladder has three foals, one of whom is a yearling. The two older progeny have made starts, but Hastabealeader is the only winner thus far.
David Wisdom bred and owns Mr Shakem Diva (Royal Shake Em-Ms Devine Diva), who finished sec- ond. Ed Hardy trains the gelding, and Nik Goodwin did the riding. L Valentino (Its Royal Time-Valentine Leader), who placed third, is owned by Jerry Olson and trained by Herman Fennell, Jr. Efren Prado was aboard.
Completing the field were Mr Imgunasteelurgirl
(Its Royal Time-Mardi Gras Mambo), Alotta Louie (Jess Louisiana Blue-A Lotta Effort), JJ Glide To Glory (Its Royal Time-JJ Sophisticated Sis), Almost Royal (Its Royal Time-Dashboard Light), Cashing It In (Such Easy Cash-Somedaymydaywillcome), Winnin N Grinnin (No Brakes Now-Hawktomistic), Anokee (Real Easy Okey-Deckabos Dakota) and Rebaday (Hadtobenuts- Rebas Plan To Cash), who threw his rider.

Diane Heath’s 5-year-old gelding All About Larry literally ran away with the win in the $30,000 Master Salls Handicap, finishing in front by 8 3/4
lengths on Aug. 12 at Ruidoso Downs.
Trained by John Stinebaugh, All About Larry
grabbed the immediate advantage and by the midpoint of the race had separated himself from the rest of the seven-horse field by a large margin, then continued to pull away. Jockey L. Salvador Martinez was aboard for the trip, completed in :44.955.
This marked the eighth win in 19 career outs for All About Larry, and the $18,000 first-place share of the purse improved his lifetime bankroll to $81,365.
All About Larry made the transition to distance races at the end of last season, winning and setting a track record at 870 yards at Turf Paradise in December. He’s won four of five outs in 2012, with all those being 870 yards with the exception of a 1,000-yarder on Jan. 20 at Turf Paradise. That streak includes a win in the SunRay Park Marathon Handicap.
Las Vegas Ranch bred All About Larry out of win- ner Come Hell Or Hiwater, who has produced two starters from seven foals. Both are multiple stakes win- ners including A Splash Of Hell, who set a 440-yard track record at Yavapai Downs in 2010.
Cool Redalo (Redalo-Isn’t Country Cool TB) finished second. Martin Orona Sr. trains Cool Redalo and co-owns the mare with Veronica Gonzalez. Alfonso Perez was in the irons. Rene Saucedo owns and trains third-place finisher Feature Showtime (Feature Mr Jess-JC Show Time), who was ridden by Jimmy Coates.
Rounding out the field, Tactful TB (Bertrando- Scare Tactics) was fourth, followed by De Passem Okey (Okey Dokey Dale-Impassable Gal TB), Git Er Done (Holland Ease-Queen Of Everything) and Zay Zay (Zayzoom TB-Imjessfirst). Worthington TB was scratched.

emperor Valerian was crowned on Aug. 18 at Ruidoso Downs, as Salvador Pimienta’s 4-year- old gelding won his first stakes race in the $20,000
Brigand Stakes. Emperor Valerian has tallied three wins in six outs in 2012, and the $12,000 payday for winning the Brigand was his third five-figure prize of the season. Emperor Valerian’s total bankroll stands at $68,508, with $45,623 of that sum coming this year.
The lead seesawed back and forth during the 550-yard Brigand. Emperor Valerian grabbed the initial advantage following a sharp break from the six gate, but Oh Hard To Sell came on strong on the inside to seize the lead. Jockey Ricky Ramirez urged Emperor Valerian back to the front in the final 200 yards, and the gelding poured on speed to win by
1 1/4 lengths, Trained by Ralph Muniz, Emperor Valerian completed the race in :26.744.
Bred by Kelly/Yearsley Equine LLC, Emperor Valerian becomes the third foal out of his dam, Sheeza Lil Val, to win a stakes race. The other two members of the brood, Valiantly and Value The Man, both hold Grade 1 victories. Sheeza Lil Val has three money finishes in stakes company, one of them a Restricted Grade 3 futurity.
Oh Hard To Sell (Shazoom-Oh Mindy Oh) posted his fourth straight runner-up finish for owner Carlos Martinez. Martin Orona, Jr., is the trainer and Sergio Rodriguez did the riding. Jesse Levario rode Double Kool (Snowbound TB-Kool As Ever)
to third place for owner George Duarte and trainer Hector Hernandez.
The remaining order of finish saw Hes Too Icy For Me (First Down Dash-Slighty Icy), winner of the 2010 Rainbow Futurity, finish fourth. He was followed by Speedy Trick (Favorite Trick TB-Shaded In Speed), Whatever Bill (Southern Corona-Edge Of Elegance) and McQueen (Southern Cartel-Chicks For Sure).
