streak N Hot cooked up a late rally in the $22,050 Cash Caravan on Aug. 12 at Canterbury Park to notch his first win of 2012 and fourth in 12 lifetime outs.
Bred by owner/trainer Dale Haglund, Streak N Hot collected his second stakes win. He also finished first in last year’s Minnesota Futurity, and all of his victories thus far have taken place at Canterbury.
Streak N Hot likely will run in the Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby to be held Sept. 2 at Canterbury. If he wins, Streak N Hot would become the third horse in track history to sweep the Minnesota Festival of Champions stakes races.
Streak N Hot broke cleanly, but then veered out. Jockey Doug Frink got the 3-year-old colt on course and in pursuit of Six It Up, the leader at that juncture in the race. Those two horses established themselves as the front-runners, with Streak N Hot beating his rival to the wire by a neck.
Streak N Hot finished the 440-yard stakes in :22.421. The pre-race favorite at the betting window, Streak N Hot produced an $11,025 payday for Haglund, pushing the colt’s total bankroll to $39,054.
Foaled in Minnesota, Streak N Hot is out of Streak N Sierra. She has two starters from three foals of racing age and five total foals. Streak N Hot is the only winner, however.
Six It Up (Tres Seis-Biddies On A High) finished a close second for owner Steven Pribyl and trainer Amber Blair. Mark Luark drew the riding assignment. CS Arc Light (A Regal Choice-Easanon) drifted out late but still hit the board in third place. Owned by Camelia and Sylvia Casby, the Victor Hanson trainee had Ismael Suarez Ricardo in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Flyin Coronas (More Nachos-Fols Feather), Western Fun (Tres Seis-Southern Fun), Rockn On Ready (Hooked On Cash-Sirprize Luck) and Rangers Little Bit (Within Range-Sydney Rae).

For A Spring Snow, winning the O.B. Cockerell Handicap proved to be twice as nice. Leticia Jaquez’s 7-year-old gelding claimed victory in that
stakes race for the second consecutive time.
A Spring Snow was decisive en route to his 15th
career win in 46 outs. He surged up the middle of the track underneath jockey Tony Guymon, overtak- ing early leader Kool Angel with relative ease and leaving the rest of his competitors behind him to win by daylight. The 350-yard trip took :17.040, and registered a 104 speed index.
Although A Spring Snow has finished in the money four times in stakes races, his only two tri- umphs in stakes company have come in the Cockerell. This latest run reaped a $15,000 payoff for his con- nections, and increased the gelding’s lifetime earnings to $258,899. The Abraham Jaquez trainee finished second in last year’s Lovington Stakes-G2 and the Sunland Championship Challenge-G2 held earlier this season and set a Ntr in 2011 at SunRay Park.
Gordon and Lynn Nees bred A Spring Snow
out of Lexines Legacy, a stakes-placed mare. Five of Lexines Legacy’s foals are starters, and while four are winners, A Spring Snow is the only stakes winner.
Raise Ur Corona (Corona Casanova-Playful Eyes) finished second for owner Guillermo Rodriguez
and trainer Alejandro Chavez. Flavio Lozano did
the riding. Pistoli (Stoli-Bettor Cartel) nosed out Eyesabenturbocharged for third. Gerardo Ochoa-Pena owns and trains Pistoli, who had Joe Ruiz in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Eyesabenturbocharged (Mr Eye Opener-Paratus), Money Hungry Cartel (Corona Cartel-Eyes Hungry), What I Want (Country Chicks Man-Secret Down Dash), Quick To Change (Royal Quick Dash-Talk About Change) and Kool Angel (First N Kool-Angels Best Effort). CP Lawman and Finder Del Rey were scratched.
special Hank Handicap
PRInce bac
by Tracy Gantz
Quarter Horses outshone Thoroughbreds in quantity and quality for the Aug. 19 Special Hank Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Handicap
at Albuquerque. Only one Thoroughbred lined up against five Quarter Horses in the 870-yard event, and the first four spots went to Quarter Horses, led by 8-year-old Prince Bac.
Prince Bac, the 2-1 favorite, almost gave the race away. He bounced to a quick lead under jockey Enrique Garcia, but blew the turn, racing wide
and losing a ton of ground. That allowed JW A Royal Flirt to sneak ahead from the inside. After they turned into the stretch, Prince Bac bore down, retaking the lead in midstretch. He drew off to a one-length victory in :45.142.
Gerardo Ochoa-Pena owns and trains Prince Bac. Since Ochoa-Pena took over the gelding’s training in 2011, Prince Bac has won four races and finished third twice in seven starts. One of those thirds came in this year’s Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge-G3, his best stakes effort prior to the Special Hank.
The Duane Ellsworth estate bred Prince Bac from winner Queen Creek Queen. The mare has four other stakes winners in her 10 winners out of 12 starters.
Tony Sedillo owns and trains second-place Royal Initiative (Royal Quick Dash-Fortuna Babe), naming Dusty Shepherd to ride. The 5-year-old gelding finished third in the 2011 Remington Distance Challenge-G3 and 2012 Key West Bonus Challenge Stakes.
JW A Royal Flirt (GW A Royal Chick-Office Wench-TB) finished third. Adan Fuentes piloted the 5-year-old gelding for owner-breeders George and Judy Weldon and trainer Blake Rust.
Completing the field were Bye Bye Jess (Dashin Bye-Shes Jess Special), Supercarls Remedy-TB (Congrats-Sweet Remedy), and Hez My Man (Heza Fast Dash-Chocolate Rabbit). Ribald-TB was scratched.
