Ruidoso Derby-G1
JESS MOVE YOU
by Danny Camp
Jess Move You captured the first derby of the season at Ruidoso Downs on June 9.
The gelding was the second fastest qualifier after winning his May 27 trial. In that race, Jess Move You overcame a slight bobble at the break and edged away for a neck victory.
Jess Move You entered the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby finals having won his last two in a row - his trial and a wire-to-wire 1 1/4-length victory in the April 22 Animas Stakes.
Jess Move You broke from the one post on the lead in the Ruidoso Derby-G1 and was never headed.
The sorrel gelding gradually pulled away from the field under jockey Agustin Silva and they crossed the line 3/4-length to the good.
The clock stopped at :19.725 for the 440- yard event for a 93 speed index.
The total purse was worth $759,197, and the first place money of $318,863 gave Jess Move You a total bankroll of $362,351.
His race record is now 10-4(2)-1-1. Beside his latest Grade 1 stakes win in this race and
his victory in the Animas Stakes, Jess Move You was also a finalist in this year’s West Texas Derby-G3.
Jess Move You is owned by Ricardo A. Bernal and Reymundo F. Resendez. Rodolfo “Rudy” Valles was in charge
of the conditioning.
The gelding was bred
in Oklahoma by Debbie Strebig out of the winning mare Gonna Move You, who earned over $10,000 in her race career. Jess Move You is her first starter.
“First and foremost I would like to thank my own- ers for trusting a horse of this quality to a 24-year-old kid,” stated trainer Valles.
“This horse came to me
a week after he won the
Animas, and he had no trouble acclimating to the Ruidoso mountain weather,” Valles contin- ued. “He is a good eater and an easy keeper.
“We breezed him one time before the trials. In the gates, he stands tall. When the gates opened in the finals, he got away good, but we knew this was a stellar field of horses.
“Jess has a heart as big as the Ruidoso racetrack, and we saw it down the lane.
He opened up a length on
a bunch of good horses. He pulled up good and around the barn, he’s just a puppy. When he steps up on the track in the morning, he gets on the muscle. He knows
his job and he likes it. This is a classy horse,” the trainer stated.
When asked about his jockey, Rudy offered, “Augie (Augustine Silva) has been
my friend since high school. I called him this morning and said, ‘Hey you have rode three races for me and won all three, we are on a
