Mountain Top Futurity-RG3
JESS FIRE CHICK
by Michael Cusortelli
Second fastest qualifer Jess Fire Chick snagged her first stakes win in just her second start in the $345,655 Mountain Top Futurity-RG3 at Ruidoso Downs on June 16. Jess Fire Chick broke from the 6-post on top and remained there throughout for a wire- to-wire run, crossing the finish line a head in front of the competition.
Ridden by Adrian Ramos and running against a reported 13-mph head wind, Jess Fire Chick covered the 350-yard trip in :17.841, posting a career-high 86 speed index.
Wes Giles prepped the filly for owners Mike Abraham and Paul Blanchard.
Jess Fire Chick made her debut with a wire- to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the last of 10 Mountain Top Futurity trials on June 1.
“She breaks hard every time,” said Blanchard, a prominent Albuquerque business- man who serves as chairman of the board of The Downs at Albuquerque Inc. “She runs
flat and runs hard the whole way. She is a 100 percent runner.”
The $145,175 winner’s share of the $345,655 Mountain Top Futurity purse pushed Jess Fire Chicks’ bankroll to $147,575 and her record is
a perfect two for two. The filly is being pointed toward the 400-yard Zia Futurity-RG1 trials at Ruidoso Downs on July 14.
Jess Fire Chick is out of Required Fire, winner of the 2013 Go Josie Go Handicap. She has produced 100% winners from two starters, including Flash Moonfire, who ran second in the 2017 Mountain Top Futurity-RG3. Jess Fire Chick is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Jess Fire Chick’s second
dam, No Tools Required,
won 3 graded stakes in Texas
from 2001-02, including the 2001 TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity-RG2, and she was a finalist in that year’s Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity.
No Tools Required produced five win- ners from nine starters, including One Hot Mecanic, the winner of the ’10 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes-RG2 and a half-brother to Required Fire, and Firing Tools, a full brother to Required Fire who ran second to reigning World Champion Jessies First Down in the $100,000 Leo Stakes-G1 at Remington Park on April 28.
Jess Fire Chick traces back to her third dam, Special Jelly Roll, a daughter of the
Easy Jet stallion Jelly Jet who won the 1990 Heritage Place Derby-RG1. An Oklahoma-bred
’87 foal, Special Jelly Roll foaled a total of three stakes winners, including Special Cross, a half-brother to No Tools Required, who won the 1994 All American Congress Futurity at Beulah Park near Columbus, Ohio.
Regard The Sevens (Chicks Regard-Seven Coronas) was second under Ricky Ramirez for owner Raider 5 Racing, LLC and
trainer Blane Wood. The gelding won his
first out in the trials to this race for the fourth fastest qualifying spot. No Mires A La Luna (First Moonflash-Dont Looke Ethel) finished in third place under Rodrigo Vallejo for owners Byron Woodard and David Valdez. The geld- ing is trained by Trey Ellis.
Cristobell Fame (Jesse James Jr-Sandys Fame), Rallydownthealley (Big Daddy Cartel- Lucky Ladyaces), Mafiosa (Jesse James Jr-Jewel Of The Night), Whooz Your Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Bridgette Bordeaux), Another Chick Flick (First Moonflash-Rime Has A Chick), Cartel Mister (Big Daddy Cartel-Arbor Mist) and Cat Daddys Lil Girl (Big Daddy Cartel- Girlonthego) completed the order of finish.
