Mr Jess Perry Stakes
T VELOCITY
by John Moorehouse
Winless in his prior six starts, T Velocity picked the ideal opportunity to break his maiden, outdueling Hez Our Prize to emerge victorious in the $100,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes on June 9 at Ruidoso Downs. The stakes gave preference by time to the ten fastest non-qauli- fiers to the Ruidoso Derby-G1.
“He’s probably doing better than he ever has,” trainer C. Dwayne “Sleepy”
Gilbreath said, noting it was
a, “Good time to break his
maiden. It really was.”
A 3-year-old gelding,
T Velocity banked a $42,000 payday that exponentially increased his total bankroll to $47,053. The gelding finished 3rd in his Ruidoso Derby trial, in what also marked the first out for the horse since he was gelded this past winter.
“He just wasn’t getting much done,” Gilbreath said
Ruidoso Juvenile
of the rookie performance of T Velocity. “We gelded him during the winter and I think that helped things a lot. Those stallions, some- times, [get] a little bit surly.”
In what marked his debut out in stakes com- pany, T Velocity broke from the 7-gate and was running a very close second to Hez Our Prize
at the first call and as they entered the stretch.
Jockey Raul Ramirez Jr. urged T Velocity to the front in the final yards, and he beat his foe to the line by a neck. T Velocity finished the 400-yard stakes in :20.392 for owner TNT Racing.
“He broke good, and just went on [to have] a good race,” Gilbreath said.
Ron Lyles bred T Velocity and owns his dam, Wave Over Phoebe, who has two starters/ money earners.
Fresh off his breakthrough victory, T Velocity will try
to keep it going at one of the most prestigious derbies of the season: the All American Derby. Hez Our Prize (Hez Our Secret-PYC Oh
Whatta Rose), the runner-up, is owned by Preston Cloud and trained by Clinton Crawford. Omar Reyes was aboard. Gilbreath also trains Hotstepper (One Famous Eagle-Pandorum), the pre-race favorite who finished third for owners Johnny Cope, R.D. Hubbard, Henry Southway, and Rafter W Stables. Jose Alvarez did the riding. Followed by Jess A Tres Of Wrong (Tres Seis-Rightamountofwrong), Flight Force (One Famous Eagle-Modice), Returning Motion (High Rate Of Return-Brimmers Motion), Heza Streakin Legacy (Heza Fast Dash-Legacys A Streakin), Mister Moody Blue (One Famous Eagle-Run The Dash), Rum Running Odee (One Dashing Eagle-Ole Auntie Em) and Ray Donovan (Favorite Cartel-Tahma Hawk).
Dash) was trained by Jackie Riddle for owner Gary W. Hartstack of Washington, Texas. Francisco Calderon rode the colt.
Lynnder 16 (Apollitical Jess-Tinys Corona Queen), the 7-10 favorite in the full field of
10, finished in third place. Jockey Cristian Esqueda rode the Oklahoma-bred filly for own- ers Tom Maher and Dick Tobin and trainer Jason Olmstead.
Contemp (Coronado Cartel-CR Sugar N Spice) ran fourth and was followed officially
by Konstant (Corona Cartel-Check N Fetch), Rustys Miracle (Valiant Hero-Rustys Lil Lady), Longgone Perry (Mr Jess Perry-The Long Straw), Pamplonna (First Moonflash-Im A Feature Girl), My Corona Sixpak (Tres Seis- Feature Me Rose), and disqualified from ninth to last was Sooner Cartel (Coronado Cartel- Buckshot Delight).

EM BODACIOUS CHICK
by Michael Cusortelli
EM Bodacious Chick broke her maiden in
a big way, as the bay filly outran her 20-1 odds to win the $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile on
June 10 at Ruidoso Downs. Preference to the race was given by time to the ten fastest non- qaulifiers to the Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
Ridden by Jaime Parga Leos and racing against a reported 10-mph head wind, EM Bodacious Chick went 350 yards in :18.124 with a nose margin of victory. Cynthia Gonzalez prepped the filly
for owner Eduardo Mendoza of Hobbs, New Mexico.
EM Bodacious Chick was coming off of a second-place finish in a 350-yard Ruidoso Futurity-G1 trial on May 25.
The filly was bred by Greg Creager of Hobbs, and she is one of five winners from six starters produced by lightly raced Californias Chick, a homebred daughter of Chicks Beduino.
Californias Chick has foaled two other stakes winners, both of whom are 1/2-broth- ers to EM Bodacious Chick: On Fire, who won the 2015 Dixie Downs Futurity in
Utah, and Im Just An Illusion, who won the 550-yard Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos in 2011. EM Bodacious Chick’s second dam, Shesacaliforniacutie, won the 1994 Central Wyoming Fair Derby.
Raced at Sunland Park and Ruidoso Downs, EM Bodacious Chick
has won one of five starts, and her resume includes a fifth
in the West Texas Juvenile
at Sunland Park on April 14. The $42,000 winner’s share of the Ruidoso Juvenile purse from EM Bodacious Chick’s maiden victory pushed her bankroll to $48,000.
