John Deere HOU Juv. Chal.-G3
CARRIS CARTEL
by Tracy Gantz
The Carrizales family members combined to win the John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3 with Carris Cartel on May 20.
Santos Carrizales rode the filly, his brother Edelmiro trains her, and Santos’ wife, Nancy, bred and races her.
Carris Cartel made her first start in the April 29 Challenge trials, where she qualified seventh. The filly drew post nine for the final and came out of the gate well. A couple of horses close to the rail chal- lenged early, but Carris Cartel spurted ahead in the last part of the 350 yards to win easily by 1-length in :17.645, earning a career-best 93 speed index.
The Carrizales family has collaborated for stakes victories before. In 2014, they won the Lone Star Distaff Challenge with Six Time Special, a half- brother to Carris Cartel.
Carris Cartel becomes the second stakes winner out of stakes-placed winner Shesa Wicked Gypsy. She has produced 100% winners from 3 starters, including stakes winner/top earner Six Time Special.
Trainer Judd Kearl finished second and third with his two qualifiers, Mickey Tiner’s homebred He Win It (Tempting Dash-Makeala), the favorite, and Esmeralda and Chad Peck’s Jessanotherbeatin (Jess Louisiana Blue-Andthebeatgoeson). He Win It, rid- den by Rodrigo Vallejo, finished second in his trial to fastest-qualifier Black Onyx. Jessanotherbeatin ran second in his trial with Vallejo aboard, and Noe Villatoro rode the colt in the final.
Completing the field were Black Onyx (Rock Solid Jess-Precious Serendipity), Ivory Noche (Ivory James-Tres Dia Noche), Ivory N Ashes (Ivory James- Sweeten My Dreams), Louisiana Seis (The Louisiana Cartel-Seis Passes), Thebunnygoeson (Jess Louisiana Blue-Andthebeatgoeson), Glimpse Of Fire (Glimpse Of Greatness-Pie Opener) and Jess Tee (Mr Jess Perry-A Game Dame).

GUSTAFAME
by Tracy Gantz
The Judd Kearl team does well at Sam Houston Race Park, and it was especially gratifying for them to win the Adequan Sam Houston Derby Challenge with Gustafame on May 20.
Coming off a nine-month layoff, Gustafame qualified the fastest when winning his April 29 trial. He blew away his competition in the final as the
6-5 favorite, leading throughout the 400 yards and scoring by an emphatic 2-lengths. Rodrigo Vallejo brought the gelding home in :19.823 for a career- high 103 speed index. The $25,420 winner’s share of the purse pushed Gustafame’s cumulative earnings to $43,410.
Jimmy Padgett is one of Kearl’s assistant trainers, and Padgett’s parents, Jim and Louise, bred and
race Gustafame. A winner of one in six starts at
two, Utah-bred Gustafame is out of unraced Kensey Ann Fame. Gustafame is the mare’s first starter,
and his record is now 3(1)-2-0 from 8 starts, with fourth place finishes in last year’s Sam Houston and Ruidoso Juvenile Challenges.
Longshot A Salty Corona (Giorgino-Corona Rosie) finished second under jockey Luciano Duenez. Joel Cantu trains the gelding for owner Roberto Resendez.
Francisco Calderon piloted Tac My Time (Tac It Like A Man-Timer Opener) to a third place finish for trainer Leon Bard and owners Marco Ramirez and Gary Hartstack.
Deala Quick Game (Dealagame-Quickid Perry) finished fourth and was followed by Mystic Daddy (Big Daddy Cartel-Arbor Mist), Hawktomatic (Foose-Tahma Hawk), RC The Duke (Jodys Money Pop-Movinstraighttoglory), Trashy Tres (Tres Seis-Jess An Illusion), Zoomin Hero (Valiant Hero-Mighty Shazoom) and Executive Moment (Executive Menace-Moment Of Epiphany).
Governor’s Cup Marathon
STOLIS PRO
by Danny Camp
Stolis Pro had a dominant performance in the $25,000 Governor’s Cup Marathon at Sam Houston Race Park on May 6.
When the gates opened, Stolis Pro left the inside post on top like a horse on a mission. Rider Francisco Calderon allowed his mount to hit his stride and set his own pace. Ahead by 2 1/2-lengths at first call, they drew away from the pack and crossed the wire an impressive 3 1/2-lengths in front. The pair went wire-to-wire, stopping the clock at :45.676 for a 98 speed index.
Capturing the first place check worth $15,000 increased the gelding’s cumulative bankroll to $86,696. This is the third stakes victory for Stolis Pro, all at 870 yards. He also won the 2016 Benny Pennington Memorial Stakes and the 2017 Sam Houston Distance Challenge.
Owned by Jerry Windham and trained by Leon Bard, Stolis Pro was homebred in Texas out of graded stakes placed winner Veva Jean. The 2014 AQHA Dam of Distinction has produced 16 starters, including top earner World Champion/High Money Earning Horse Stolis Winner, who won the 2008 All American Futurity-G1 and 4 other Grade 1 races. Rainbow Futurity-G1 winner Trendi, Texas Hi-Point Aged Gelding/Texas Hi-Point Distance Horse Stolis Pro and TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes winner Zoomin Winner are her other stakes winners.
Corona La Jolla (Tinys First Corona-Mary La Jolla) banked second place money under Noe Villatoro for owner Crown Racing and trainer Judd Kearl.
The Field Cricket (Lead The Field-Quick Lil Cricket) finished third for owner Claud R. Denson and trainer Jesse Yoakum. Jerry Yoakum had the mount.
Eyesa Shoofly Dandy (Gold Medal Jess-Miss Sound Viking) and God I Am Handsome (Time For A God-Room To Bloom TB) completed the field. Bet I Make U Famous was scratched.
