by Danny Camp
Astiff head wind on a rainy day didn’t dampen the spirit of 11 starters in the $45,000 Two Rivers Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 15.

Covered Bridges Stakes-G3
QUARTER FOCUS
by Danny Camp
The money is paid at the wire, not at the gate or on the backside, especially in an 870-yard race. The Covered Bridges Stakes-G3 is such a race, and was run at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 15 with a total purse worth $25,000.
Quarter Focus broke third from the 4-post
and rallied while four wide to take the win. Raul Gutierrez sat as quiet as a shadow in the saddle, keeping his mount in the clear while never dropping down to the rail to finish 2-lengths in front at the wire. The team stopped the timer in :46.237 for an 89 speed index.
The winner’s share of the purse was worth $14,250 and boosted the gelding’s earnings to $91,604. Quarter Focus was a finalist in the 2015 Prairie Meadows Championship Challenge-G2.
The sorrel gelding is owned/trained is Jack Eck, and was bred in Texas by Scarlett Hill Farm Inc. out of the 2-time winner/G2 finalist/Ntr setter Feeling Giddy. Quarter Focus is her only foal.

V Os Filo (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Miss Eyewear) held on to claim third place money for owner Rodney Von Ohlen and trainer Edward Hardy. Cristian Esqueda handled the reins. The gelding won this year’s Cash Caravan Stakes at Canterbury Park.

Polk County Derby
THE FISCAL CLIFF
by Tracy Gantz
The Fiscal Cliff always turns in an honest and con- sistent effort. After winning his first five races, he has finished worse than second just once, and he captured the Polk County Derby handily at Prairie Meadows on Oct. 15.
The Derby’s fastest qualifier from the Oct. 1 trials, The Fiscal Cliff went off as the 1-2 favorite in the final. He got away a step slowly, but rallied for jockey Cesar Gomez to win by 2-lengths in :20.004 for the 400 yards.
Kasey Willis trains The Fiscal Cliff for owner/ breeder Thomas Lepic. Last year, the colt won
the Heritage Place Juvenile Invitational, the Iowa Double Gold Futurity and Jim Bader Futurity.
Lepic bred The Fiscal Cliff in Iowa from Signs Zoomer, a half-sister to stakes winners First Painted Sign and Second Painted Sign. The mare has produced 100% money earners/winners from three starters, including multiple stakes winner/top earner Wagon Tales.
Watch My Wallet Loto (Mr Piloto-Cocopata) got his first stakes-placing by finishing second. David Pinon rode the gelding for trainer Manuel Campos and owner Thomas Scheckel.
