Altoona Derby
FERRARI JAMES
by Tracy Gantz
Ferrari James went into the Oct. 15 Altoona Derby with a perfect four-for-four record at Prairie Meadows. A rough start threatened to derail that
streak, but the 9-10 favorite overcame it.
PYC Tyme swerved in and bumped Ferrari James
right after the gate opened, and Ferrari James was in tight between him and Justified. Jockey Oscar Delgado got Ferrari James clear, and they started passing rivals, getting a neck victory in :19.924 for the 400 yards. Ferrari James earned a 87 index and the $43,399 win- ner’s share of the purse boosted his earnings to $150,662.
Manuel Campos trains Ferrari James for owner Alfredo Botello. The gelding won a 2015 allowance race at Prairie Meadows and this year captured his trial and final for the Iowa Double Gold Derby before qualifying the fastest for the Altoona Derby.
Weetona Stanley and W. E. Smith bred Ferrari James in Oklahoma out of Ferarri Fast Prize. She has produced 100% money earners from 12 starters, includ- ing stakes-placed Ferarri GT and top earner V Power.
Longshot Divas Candy Girl (Spit Curl Jess-Some Kinda Diva) finished second for jockey Brayan Velazquez. Jason Olmstead trains the filly for owner Thomas Scheckel. Divas Candy Girl won the Dash In A Flash Stakes and finished second in the 2015 North Central QHRA Futurity. Larry Payne piloted Prized Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-First Prize Honey) to third for trainer Gina Downing and owner Joel Rod Pierce. The colt had placed in two previous stakes.
