STEVIE B FIRST CASH
by Dillon Hamilton
Two-time Grade 1 placer Stevie B First Cash became a 2-time stakes winner in the $25,000 Town Policy Stakes for three year olds at Los Alamitos on Nov. 5.
The sorrel colt reaffirmed his favoritism over the field with an impressive jaunt for his second career stakes victory. Stevie B First Cash broke well from the third post position under jockey Jesus Ayala, asserting his presence with the leaders.
The colt took a nose lead at the first call and inched ahead to a 1/2-length margin in the stretch. The racing pair proved best, maintaining a 1/2-length on any would-be rivals. The pair sprinted the 400- yard fast track in :19.791, earning a 91 speed index.
Stevie B First Cash’s lifetime earnings rose to $210,931, after bagging the $13,750 winner’s share of the purse for owners Two Feathers Series, LLC and trainer Bret Vickery. The colt also won this year’s First Down Dash Derby.
The Lepic-Morgan Partnership bred Stevie B First Cash out of 3-time Champion/6-time New Track Record setter/Oklahoma Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Filly Spit Curl Diva, in Oklahoma. The 12-time stakes winner boasts three stakes winners, including top earner/Grade 3 winner Coronas First Diva. Stevie B First Cash is her first multiple stakes winner.
We Like Corona (Corona Cartel-Jess Jets) finished second under G. Rangel for owner Howard Nichols and trainer Jose Flores.
Thermonuclear Energy (Walk Thru Fire-Terrific Energy) finished third under Eduardo Nicasio for owner Parsons Family Limited Partnership and trainer Christopher O’Dell.
Dynasty Energy (FDD Dynasty-Terrific Energy) finished fourth and was followed by Kotur (Good Reason SA-Make A Run), Mi Viejo (Mr Jess Perry- Lady Of Lake TB) and Snitching (Walk Thru Fire- Departing). Luv On The Run scratched.
Norwalk Handicap
FORGET IT
by Tracy Gantz
Hector Villalobos bought Forget It privately earlier this year, and while the 2015 multiple stakes winner performed well in major events, he
hadn’t made it to the winner’s circle this year. That changed when Forget It, trained by Jose Moreno for Villalobos, turned in a powerful performance to win the Norwalk Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 7.
Forget It broke second with Cruz Mendez aboard and took a few strides to get into rhythm. Once he did, though, the gelding flashed to the front and won easily, the official margin 3/4-length, in :17.678 for the 350 yards.
In 2015, Forget It won three derbies at Los Alamitos—the Southern California Derby-G1,
El Primero Del Ano Derby-G3 and Governor’s
Cup Derby-RG3. Dr. Ed Allred bred Forget It in California and sold him for $40,000 as a yearling at the 2013 Los Alamitos Equine Sale.
Forget It is out of multiple graded stakes win- ner Forgive Him. She has won four stakes for her owner-breeder, including the 2008 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G1 and the 2009 Las Damas H.-G2, among others. She has produced 100% money earners from seven starters including She Forgives, winner of the 2013 Holiday Handicap. Calif. Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Gelding Forget It is her top earner at $579,714.
Freakin Runaway (Ocean Runaway-Streakin Freakin) finished second by a neck under jockey Carlos Huerta. Mike Robbins trains the 4-year-old gelding for owner Michael Amburn.
Dr Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Eye For Corona), owned by EG High Desert Farms, trained by Yanet Rodriguez, and ridden by Jesus Ayala, ran third.
Completing the field were Walk Around Blues (Walk Thru Fire-Queens R Blue), Walk The Catwalk (Walk Thru Fire-Alley Cat Cartel), and Closing Time (TR Dasher-Singles Scene).
Newport Handicap
NYMPH
by Tracy Gantz
Nymph has put together a strong record at Los Alamitos, having won three stakes there prior to the Oct. 21 Newport Handicap. Sent away the
3-2 favorite, the filly added a fourth victory in the Newport Handicap
The start was delayed when Kickin Seis became fractious in the gate and had to be scratched. Nymph stumbled at the start, breaking fourth of the five horses. But she and jockey Carlos Huerta surged forward in the final part of the 350-yard event to win by a neck in :17.760.
“When she stumbled away from the gate, that’s when I got a little concerned,” said trainer Scott Willoughby. “She finished extremely strong tonight.”
Willoughby trains Nymph for owner-breeder Dr. Ed Allred. The filly earlier this year won the Emma Bug Handicap, California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes, as well as the 2015 Corona Chick Handicap. She finished second in last year’s Autumn Handicap.
Allred bred Nymph in California from
his homebred winner Elans Last. The mare
has produced five winners from six starters. The second dam, Elans Special, captured the 1987 All American Futurity-G1 and earned $1,186,540. Elans Special also produced World Champion Really Special and stakes winner Gotothemountain.
Blane Schvaneveldt Ranch LLC’s homebred Secondswitch (First Prize Perry-Jazzin Mandi) finished second with Minor Arana aboard. Rafael Orozco trains the filly.
Summer Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Summer Love Song) finished third under Rodrigo Aceves for trainer Jaime Gomez and owner Dutch Masters III.
Strawfinders Jessee (One Sweet Jess-Strawfinder) finished fourth and was followed by Shoulda Kissed Me (FDD Dynasty-Love My Corona). Kickin Seis was scratched.
