                                Wild West Futurity
BANNISTER
by Tracy Gantz
Nothing beats friends collaborating on a good horse, and Bannister, owned by Denny and Sandy Weigt and trained by Monty Arrossa, won the
Oct. 23 Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity.
“I’ve known Denny my whole life,” said Arrossa. “I was training part time, and Denny is the one that
convinced me to start training full time.”
The field broke so closely that favored Bannister
was listed as seventh away from the gate. He and jockey Tony Guymon edged forward and battled with Jess Klas to the wire, winning by a head in :17.730 for the 350 yards.
Arrossa bought Bannister for $6,200 at the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The gelding qualified the fastest for the Wild West Futurity 2 1/4-lengths to the good and earlier won the Beehive Futurity and finished third in the Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge.
J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley bred Bannister in Oklahoma from winner Goddess Artemis. Bannister is the mare’s top earner and first winner.
A $10,000 claim in September, Jess Klas (One Sweet Jess-This Snow Shows Klas) ran second. Guillermo Suarez rode the filly for trainer Ricardo Guillen and owner Javier Alvarez, Jr.
Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing’s homebred Henry Craig (One Sweet Jess-Copa Show Girl) finished third for jockey Eulices Gomez and trainer Hector Magallanes. The gelding came into the race undefeated in five starts, including two stakes.

Golden State Juvenile
ATTACK THE WIND
by Tracy Gantz
Attack The Wind attacked his competition in the Golden State Juvenile at Los Alamitos on Oct. 30. His tenacity was rewarded when he scored in the first stakes victory of his career.
La Dulce Vita broke on top in the 400-yard Juvenile, while Attack The Wind came out well in second under Ramon Sanchez. Attack The Wind quickly took command and never relinquished it. Closers couldn’t catch him, as he posted a neck vic- tory in :20.024.
Guillermo Morales trains Attack The Wind for owner Cesar Nunez, who bought the gelding for $32,000 at the 2015 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Attack The Wind broke his maiden at Los Alamitos in his fifth start.
Steve Burns bred Attack The Wind in California and consigned him to the sale in the name of Burns Ranch. Burns’ homebred stakes winner Attack The Cartel produced Attack The Wind, the mare’s first starter. The second dam, stakes-placed Separate Tac, has produced three stakes-placed runners. Separate Tac is a half-sister to graded stakes winner I Ought To Be First.
Stormy Smith piloted Im Tellin Ya (One Famous Eagle-Teller N Telleragain) to second for trainer Mike Robbins and owner Reliance Ranches, LLC. The gelding had won once and placed four times in eight previous starts.
EG High Desert Farms’ homebred La Dulce Vita (One Sweet Jess-Magic And Rhythm) finished third with Jesus Ayala aboard. Yanet Rodriguez trains the filly, who has a maiden and trial win to her credit.
Completing the field were American Force (First Down Dash-American Purse), Redneck Ryan (Separatist-A Delightful Legacy), Opulence (FDD Dynasty-Gulfstream Girl), Coquete (Foose-A Honey Of A Dash) and That Rico (Carters Cartel- Jess Like That).
Autumn Handicap
ONE SWEET JEWEL
by Tracy Gantz
Michelle Cravens has a varied equine back- ground, having showed in Western pleasure and dressage as well as working as a racetrack groom.
That experience paid off in her homebred operation, with One Sweet Jewel giving Cravens and her hus- band, Jeff, their first stakes victory in the Autumn Handicap at Los Alamitos on Oct. 8.
One Sweet Jewel went off as a 19-1 longshot for trainer Jimmy Glenn Jr. and jockey Eulices Gomez. The filly surged to the front early, grabbing the lead from between horses. One Sweet Jewel held off her rivals by the narrowest of noses in :17.887 for the 350 yards.
After breaking her maiden in her first start, One Sweet Jewel had some gate trouble but still managed to win an allowance race three races later.
Michelle Cravens bred One Sweet Jewel in California from winning Grade 2 stakes finalist Shake The Magic. She has produced 100% money earners/winners from four starters. One Sweet Jewel is her first stakes winner and top earner at $25,700.
Amado De LaRiva’s Apollitical Boogie (Apollitical Jess-Shakin Ana Dashin) finished second under jockey Rodolfo Arvizu for trainer Guillermo Morales.
