lovington Stakes-g2
DM STreakn Thru FIre
by John Moorehouse
DM Streakn Thru Fire picked up his first stakes victory, catching Zulu Dragon to win the $55,360 Lovington Stakes-G2 on Nov.
4 at Zia Park.
It took the 4-year-old gelding until his
15th out to notch that first stakes win, but that stat should come with some explanation. DM Streakn Thru Fire had competed in six previous stakes events, included among them some of the most prestigious
races for Quarter Horses.
The Michael Joiner trainee’s
previous record includes five
Grade 1 stakes, among them
the 2010 Texas Classic and
All American futurities, along
with last year’s All American
and Rainbow derbies.
In the Lovington, which saw DM Streakn Thru Fire sent off as the betting favorite, the gelding was running
sixth at the first call, but then
champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. urged the gelding to make his big move. DM Streakn Thru Fire led by a head going into the stretch, and pulled away to win by three-quarters of
a length. DM Streakn Thru Fire covered the 400 yards in :19.336. He also brought home a $33,000 payday for owners Rick Sturdivant, Terry Wootan and Joe David Yates.
Don Moler bred DM Streakn Thru Fire and owns his dam, Sashay N
Six, a 2001 mare who won the Northlands Futurity-G3 and posted four third-place efforts in graded stakes. As
a broodmare, Sashay N Six has foaled 13 offspring, 12 of which have made starts. That group includes five winners, and while DM Streakn Thru Fire is the first stakes winner, half-brother DM Strait Up was second in last season’s Remington Park Juvenile.
JD Baccarat (Mr Jess Perry-Sizzling Lola) finished second for owners J. Cope, S. Herzog, H. Southway, R.D. Hubbard and R. Masterson. The Paul Jones trainee had Jesse Levario aboard. Zulu Dragon (First Down Dash- Hidden Dragon), who was coming off a win
in the Hobbs Stakes-G2, placed third for his owners at 21 Partnership.
Zulu Dragon is trained by Eduardo Gonzalez and had Jaime Leos up.
The remaining order of finish was Double Chiseled (SC Chiseled In Stone-Specialy Double), Tres Seis Nueve (Tres Seis-Ya Ya Sisterhood), Oh Hard To Sell (Shazoom-Oh Mindy Oh), Teller More Bourbon (Teller Cartel-Bourbonstreetchick), Mighty Famous Vic (Mighty Invictus-Fame Us Katie), Who Stoll The Ruby (Stoli-Ruby Medallion) and Dr Proctor (Feature Mr Jess-Daring Deception).

new Mexico Breeders Championship-rg3
STel gone Corona
by Michael Compton
The winner’s circle had eluded Stel Gone Corona for much of this season. Making
his first start at 440 yards in the New Mexico Breeders Championship-RG3 on Nov. 4 at The Downs at Albuquerque, Stel Gone Corona led his connections to the highly coveted winner’s enclosure in his sixth start of the year with a wire-to-wire score in the $50,000 race.
Ridden by Jose Alvarez, Stel Gone Corona broke sharply at the start.
He was gradually forced out
through the lane by Visible
Injun to his inside, but held that rival safe to win by a nose, stopping the timer in :21.214. Stel Gone Corona earned a speed index of 98. The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse lifted his lifetime bankroll to $153,062. It was the second stakes victory
for the 4-year-old Stel Gone Corona, a winner in five of

12 lifetime starts. His other stakes score came in the 2011 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes-RG2 at Sunland Park.
Bred in New Mexico by Double A Ranch, Stel Gone Corona is owned by Veronica Ramirez and is trained by Jaime Dominguez. Stel Gone Corona is produced from the win- ning Meter Me Gone mare Meter Her Gone, who has produced three foals of racing age. In
addition to Stel Gone Corona, Meter Her Gone has dropped Her Sixes Royal who qualified for the 2009 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity-RG2 at SunRay Park where she fin- ished sixth.
Second-place finisher Visible Injun dueled for the early lead and drifted out in the run to the wire under jockey Adam Martinez. Visible Injun (Invisible Injun-Debs Winner), winner of the 2011
New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby-RG3 at Albuquerque, is owned by Verona Vaughn and trained by Lonnie Vaughn.
The 8-year-old gelding Seacrest Out raced in fourth position early and traveled evenly late to finish third with Elliot Bachicha Jr. in the irons for trainer Elliot Bachicha. Seacrest Out (Genuine Strawfly-De Candi Kas), win- ner of the 2011 Lineage Claiming Stakes at Albuquerque, is owned by Marcellino Ortiz.
Reporting home behind the top three finishers in the New Mexico Breeders Championship were Corona Dream (Southern Corona-Call My Dream), race favorite Iseeyoustaring (Sixes Royal-Mystic Rime), Injun Toole (Invisible Injun-Becky O Toole), Call A Fast Corona (Southern Corona-Call Me First Fast) and South Oak (Oak Tree Special- Southasofia).
