hunch bettors looking for symmetry in names might have liked Black Rosalita to win the Nov. 10 Black Gold Derby at Will
Rogers Downs, but plenty of shrewd handi- cappers picked her as well. The filly went off as the 6-5 favorite, and she performed just as expected, demolishing the field.
Drawn on the outside, Black Rosalita broke a little slowly, but she was so much the best that it wasn’t any kind of
disadvantage. Jockey James
Flores quickly urged her for-
ward, and once she found her
best stride, she simply pow-
ered past the competition.
Black Rosalita drew away to
win the 400-yard race by two
lengths in :19.693.
Luz Chavira trains Black Rosalita for the Francis
L. Glowacki L97 Trust, which also bred the filly in Maryland. At 2, she won two
of nine races, and she has improved upon
that record this year to take five of 11 races, including the Charlie Claborn Memorial Stakes, also at Will Rogers. Black Rosalita’s earnings now stand at $91,639 with the $31,250 winner’s share from the Black Gold Derby. Flores has piloted the filly in every race since June and has won on her four times.
Sired by the First Down Dash stallion Sweet First Down, Black
Rosalita is out of the win- ning Tolltac mare Poneta. Glowacki also raced the mare, who has produced five win- ners in eight starters. Black Rosalita’s second dam, April Nine, was stakes-placed and earned $69,367.
Just Wave (Wave Carver- Miss Jess Perry) saved second by a head with Paul Nieto aboard. Luis Villafranco trains the colt for Dream
Walkin Farms Inc. Just Wave in four 2012 starts has never finished worse than fourth.
Painted Lies (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Teller Lies) finished third in the Black Gold Derby for owner Tom Maher, trainer Amber Blair, and jockey Cody Smith. Earlier this year, Painted Lies won the Adequan Prairie Meadows Derby Challenge-G3 and the Minnesota Stallion Breeders/NCQHRA Derby at Canterbury Park.
Rounding out the field were BP Valliant Man (Valiant Hero-JA Fast Lady), Judge James (Ivory James-JD Me Too), Beda Kickit In (Sweet First Down-Royal Beda Quick), Just Cuz (Cartel Success-RG Special), BV Valentine Wagon (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Eyesa First), Lovin You (Teller Cartel-Love Ya Miss Jess), and Escort West (Fly Jess Fly-Chain Of Fools). Valjean was scratched.

CaSey Corona
by John Moorehouse
Casey Corona is finishing strong in his inaugural season of competition. The 2-year-old gelding posted his second straight
futurity victory on Oct. 27 at Beulah Park in Ohio, taking first place in the $34,817 All American Congress Futurity. Casey Corona started this win streak in the GLQHA SSS Futurity, held in September at Mt. Pleasant Meadows in Michigan.
A Walter Harrison home- bred, Casey Corona won this start with relative ease. He broke on top from the five hole, opening a 1 1/2-length advantage by the first call, and crossed the finish line still 3/4-lengths in front of his competition.
A Carol Rettele trainee, Casey Corona covered the 400 yards in :20.156, regis- tering a 96 speed index that stands as his new personal
best. Gabriel Lagunes was aboard. This victory produced a $15,672 payday, another career-high for the gelding, and improved his total earnings to $35,736. Casey Corona has four wins in six total starts.
Casey Corona’s dam, Precious Debutante, is another multiple stakes winner. Two of her foals posted stakes victories on this Beulah Park card. Seiswho, a half-brother to Casey
Corona, finished first in
the All American Congress Derby. Five of Precious Debutante’s eight offspring are stakes winners; the oth- ers are Mr Corona To You, Fearles Fred and Ida Snow Man. Harrison also owns Precious Debutante, a 1997 mare who placed third in two graded races as part of a 2-2-2 record in stakes company.
Mr Jess Down Focash (Papa Larry-Jacquards
Darling) finished strong to take second place for owner Quency Grant. Amanda Welch is the trainer and Lee Gates did the riding.
Braggs Hero (Valiant Hero-Trickie Lassie), one of the biggest longshots in the field at odds of 26-1 odds, is owned and trained by Harold Bragg. Annie Seabury drew the riding assignment.
Rounding out the field, Six Fols Cartel (Mito Corona-Six Fols Dash) finished fourth, followed by Royal Chickory (Sies Royal- Passage West) and Fernie Cash Box (Seeking Liberty-A Quick Texas Chick). Traffic Patrol (Quick Action TB-Chic N Traffic) and WH Callfor The Money (Cartel Success-Merridocs Call) dead-heated for seventh. GC First Prize Perry (First Prize Perry-Sheza Gonzo) and Flyinmycorona (Midnight Corona-Oklahoma Red Bud) completed the order of finish.
