B.F. Phillips, Jr. Stakes-rg3
The FIelD CrICkeT
by John Moorehouse
The Field Cricket made some noise on Oct. 27
at Lone Star Park. Claud Denson’s 4-year-old gelding went wire-to-wire to win the $20,000 B.F. Phillips Jr. Stakes-RG3, collecting his fifth victory in 15 starts and his first in stakes company. The $11,800 payday also allowed The Field Cricket to surpass the $50,000 mark to reach a $53,548 total.
The Field Cricket already had finished in the money in two prior stakes events this year, placing second in the Live Oak Handicap and third in the Classic Chevrolet Heartbeat of America Stakes.
This time, he had no equal. Trained by Jesse Yoakum, The Field Cricket broke on top from the four gate, quickly seizing a one-length advantage by the first call. First Klas Fred challenged The Field Cricket for the lead, but The Field Cricket success- fully held off his rival, getting to the finish line first by a neck. Jockey Jerry Yoakum did the riding, completing the 400-yard event in :19.533.
Mary Denson bred The Field Cricket out of her homebred mare, Quick Lil Cricket. The lightly-raced 1998 mare has produced three starters among four total foals. All three competitors have been to the winner’s circle, but The Field Cricket becomes the first to tally a stakes vitory.
First Klas Fred (Fredricksburg-She Flies First Klas), the runner-up and winner of the Classic Chevrolet, is owned by Denis and Julie Schoenhofer. R.L. Robinson is the trainer and jockey Luis Vivanco was aboard the 2-1 favorite. Nowurtalkin (Heza Fast Dash-Illusive Star TB) placed third for owner Jose Salazar. The Judd Kearl trainee had Rodrigo Vallejo in the irons.
The remaining order of finish was Sparrow Contender (Contend-Taint Special), Sunny D (Okey Dokey Dale-Sweethearts Lady), Acorn (Oak Tree Special-Trio Gal TB), Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky N Picky) and Jessa Kool Perry (Mr Jess Perry-First Kool Baby).
Portland Meadows Fall D.
J ManCuSo
by John Moorehouse
There’s been anything but a sophomore slump for
J Mancuso. The 3-year-old gelding improved
to 4-1-0 in five starts in 2012, with a half-length victory in the $15,550 Portland Meadows Fall Derby held Oct. 28 at Portland Meadows.
All four of J Mancuso’s wins this year have come in succession. The gelding started the win streak
in a 350-yard allowance at Los Alamitos in March, and kept the streak going through the derby trials at Portland, where J Mancuso not only won but posted the top qualifying time of :20.160.
In the finals, jockey J. Luis Torres steered J Mancuso across the finish line in :19.820, posting a career-best 105 speed index. J Mancuso’s owners, Silvestre Delapaz Sanguino and Jimmy Cancino Sanguino, collected $6,220 for the win.
J Mancuso now has seven wins in 16 starts with $32,829 in earnings. Juan Sanguino trains J Mancuso, who is the first stakes winner for his dam, That Lovely Day. All three of That Lovely Day’s foals have made starts, and two of the three are winners. Pick Six Stables, L. Pineda and Paul Jones bred J Mancuso.
CM Got Overserved (Corona For Me-Mi Fames A Dandy) placed second for owner/breeder Randy Dickerson. Nick Lowe is the trainer and Joe Crispin did the riding. Juan Sanguino also trains Sensor (Fastnfierce-Hope Too Zoom), who finished third by a nose. Arturo Alvarado Contreras owns Sensor, who was ridden by Deborah Hoonan.
The remaining order of finish was Bellingham (Check Him Out-My Ladys Eyes), Bradens Bustlinbooty (Spanish Boot-Mongoose Chick),
Cool Blue Corona (Jess Louisiana Blue-Corona
Lil), Fullafun (Ocean Runaway-Western Love TB), Vintage Lockett (Panther Mountain-A Delightful High), Cascade Dynamite (Mountains Majesty- Mary A Millionaire TB) and Givemesumcorona (Stel Corona-Sumclassndash).
Town Policy Stakes
new look
by Michael Compton
new Look rediscovered his best stride in time to take down top prize in the $25,000 Town Policy Stakes at Los Alamitos on Nov. 2.
The 3-year-old son of Walk Thru Fire won
four of his first five starts in 2012, including the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G2 in April. New Look was winless in his four most recent starts, however, and had struggled of late with leaving the gate cleanly.
With a new rider in Cody Jensen and an alert take off, New Look regained his early-season form in the Town Policy and turned in a sparkling per- formance for owner Martha Wells and trainer Dan Francisco. New Look jumped out to the lead early and widened his advantage to the wire, crossing the finish 1 1⁄4-lengths clear of runner-up Consider. New Look covered the 400 yards in :19.739.
Jensen picked up the mount because jockey Antonio Alberto was involved in a spill earlier in the evening. It was reported later that night that Alberto was OK and being released from the hospital.
New Look, bred in California by Ed Allred, has now won six of 17 starts and earned $141,090. He
is the only foal out of the placed mare Make Over, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Gotothemoutnain and APHA Champion Really Special. His second dam is All American Futurity-G1 winner Elans Special.
Consider (Corona Cartel-First Regards) chased the winner from the outset under Eduardo Nicasio. Consider is owned by Tom Atwood and trained by John Wells. Ed Allred’s Kool Million, the 2-1 favorite, rallied to finish third under Cruz Mendez. Kool Million (Bono Jazz- Kool As Ever) is trained by Jose Flores.
Jess Wilson (Feature Mr Jess-Chicksdashn), Ladies Royal Six (Check Him Out-Royal Six Lady), Properly Snowbound (Snowbound TB-Properly), Hi On
The List (Streakin La Jolla-Hiclass Cloned), A Mere Dynasty (Feature Mr Jess-A Mere Classic), Meareds Boy (Mountains Majesty-Meared) completed the field.
