Mr Jess Perry Stakes-RG3
GONE CARTEL
by Michael Compton
Gone Cartel scored his fourth consecutive victory and became a stakes winner in the $25,000 Mr Jess Perry Stakes-RG3 at Louisiana Downs on Feb. 24. While his three previous scores came in optional claiming and allowance company, the jump to the stakes ranks didn’t phase the 5-year- old brown gelding.
Ridden by Damian Martinez, Gone Cartel broke smartly and dueled for the lead from the start. He raced head to head with MPS Shake Em N Style early and held at bay a late charge from Im All Out to prevail by a nose at the finish. Gone Cartel covered the 350- yard distance in :17.517, earning a 101 speed index.
Gone Cartel, owned by Tommy Rhodes and trained by Vann Haywood, improved his mark to 21-8(1)-3-1 and the $15,000 winner’s share increased his earnings to $141,997. He was a finalist in the 2016 Louisiana QHBA Derby-RG3 and 2017 Delta 550 Stakes-RG3 and he finished 4th in LQHBA Futurity-RG1 at two.
Chad Hart bred Gone Cartel out of winner Ms Big Dashin Now. She has produced 100% money earners from three starters. Gone Cartel is her first stakes winner and top earner.
Im All Out (Heza Fast Dash-Streak N Attitude) and jockey David Alvarez finished second for owner Girl Goes Racing, LLC and trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr. TF Racee Runaway (Sir Runaway Dash-Racee Rainbows) and Everardo Rodriguez closed ground late to finish third for owner Tate Farms and trainer Lanny Keith. Followed by MPS Shake Em N Style (Shake Em White-Style N Grace), Icanonlyemagine (Swingin Jess-Real Or Imagined), WW Showtime (First Prize Perry-WW Family Tradition), LDN Jessasaltydog
(Im Dalaw-Jessa Blue Crystal), Scoopies Leaving You (Coronas Leaving You-Ms Scoopies Toast), One Hot Flame (Fast Prize Dash-Rump Shakin) and Coronaoro (Coronas Leaving You-Orotoast).
Magnolia Stakes
JW WHO DAT
by John Moorehouse
JW Who Dat’s 2018 campaign is off to a fantastic start. With his victory in the $25,000 Magnolia Stakes at Louisiana Downs on Feb. 3, the six-year- old gelding now has two stakes wins so far this year in only two starts.
This time, JW Who Dat bested a field that included reigning AQHA Distance Champion
B And G Fast Dash. With Antonio Alberto in the irons, JW Who Dat shot from the 2-post on top and was never headed for a wire-to-wire victory. The geld- ing crossed the wire 1-length in front and stopped the timer in :46.514 for an 89 speed index.
The $15,000 winner’s share of the purse boosted his total lifetime earnings to $62,192.
Owned by Renato Contreras and trained by Javier Contreras, JW Who Dat now holds six wins in 24 total starts. He won the Marathon Stakes at this same track on Jan. 13, in what also marked his debut at the 870-yard distance.
J. W. Owens bred JW Who Dat out of winner EW Comment, a half-sister to Texas Hi-Point 3-Year-Old Colt First Comment. EW Comment has produced 100% money earners from five starters. JW Who Dat is her first stakes winner and top money earner.
JW Who Dat will now head to Delta Downs to tackle the 870 stakes events on that track’s upcoming stakes schedule.
Triple C Racing Stables LLC, owns both the second and third place finishers, who both are trained by Jesus Garrido. Im Mighty Fast (Mighty Corona-Sheza Fast Doll) was second under Randy Edison, while Juan Marquez rode third place finisher Struttinmyjewelsoff (Struttin To Beduino-Jewel Dont Back Down).
